Chalfant to share Seed to Table receives grant creek restoration story Whychus Creek has been reborn, but how will its story flow from here? That’s a question that con- cerns Brad Chalfant, execu- tive director of the Deschutes Land Trust. The Land Trust has devoted much of the last decade to building com- munity partnerships, raising money, and organizing the physical labor required to return Whychus Creek to a meandering waterway full of life. It’s a great start, but it’s only the beginning, Chalfant says. “There’s a perception that the creek is coming back to life, simply because a couple of non-profits and the Forest Service worked their magic,” he said. “The reality is that the rebirth of Whychus Creek began far earlier when local citizens stepped up and took a stand. More importantly, the future is far from certain, and we continue to need active citizen involvement if we’re truly to bring Whychus back.” Chalfant will bring the story of the restoration of Whychus Creek to The Belfry at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, See LECTURE on page 31 Northwest Farm Credit Services awarded Seed to table in Sisters a $2,500 Northwest FCS Rural Community Grant. “Seed to Table Oregon is extremely grateful for the generous Rural Grant pro- vided by Northwest Farm Credit Services,” said Seed to Table Executive Director Audrey Tehan. “The grant is critical to help revive our propagation greenhouse by allowing us to install a new cover and heating system. The upgrade will help us grow 10,000 more pounds of vegetables each year and pro- vide shelter and warmth for our education farm during the cold Central Oregon spring and fall. Community sup- port from businesses such as Northwest FCS is essential for us to continue increasing the health and wellness of the community.” In 2018 to date, Northwest Farm Credit Services com- mitted over $189,000 to 126 projects in rural communi- ties across Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Since the program’s incep- tion in 2007, it has awarded 932 grants totaling more than $1.65 million. The next rural grant deadline is October 1. If you think your rural project may be eligible for a grant, visit www.northwestfcs. com/Stewardship/Rural- Communities for more infor- mation and an application. Northwest FCS is an $11 billion financial coopera- tive providing financing and related services to farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses, commercial fishermen, timber producers, rural homeowners and crop insurance customers in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Northwest FCS is a member of the nationwide Farm Credit System that supports agricul- ture and rural communities with credit and financial ser- vices.
