All prescribed burn units will be scheduled to take advantage of fall weather and forest fuel conditions. “This is a continuation of treatments utilizing pre- scribed fire in a historic fire- adapted ecosystem to reduce GRAPHIC PROVIDED Sisters’ fall burning season is about to begin. and remove hazardous fuels that contribute to high-inten- sity fire events which may occur during the normal fire season, and to improve habitat for various wildlife species,” the Forest Service reported. The areas on the enclosed map are project units that are near or adjacent to the community. Temporary trail closures will be in effect on small por- tions the Lake Creek Trail (Trail No. 4096) beginning at the Lake Creek Trailhead extending roughly one mile to the west, as well as on the Metolius-Windigo Trail (Trail No. 99) beginning at the 1216 road, extending roughly one- half mile to the south during prescribed fire and mop-up operations on the Metolius WUI 42 & 18 unit. No road closures are antici- pated with any of the projects, although drivers may expect traffic control on Highway 20 and Highway 242 during periods of time where dense smoke may limit visibility. Traffic control measures are anticipated in Camp Sherman along portions of County Road 1419 as well as north of Sisters along Indian Ford Road (Forest Service Road 1102). Smoke from the Highway 20/Indian Ford Road Project may impact all communities north of Highway 20 includ- ing communities in the Indian Ford drainage, Aspen Lakes, and along Camp Polk and Hair & Nails Wilt roads. Smoke from the Sisters Area Fuel Reduction Project (SAFR) may impact the town of Sisters, Crossroads, Tollgate, Cascade Meadow Ranch, and Camp Polk communities. Smoke from the Metolius Basin Forest Management Project may impact Metolius Meadows, Camp Sherman communities and special interest sites including: Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery, Head of Metolius viewing area, Lower Black Butte Trail Head, Candle Creek Campground (CG), Lower Bridge CG, Pioneer Ford CG, Allen Springs CG, Lower Canyon Creek CG, Gorge CG, Pine Rest CG, Smiling River CG, Allingham CG, Camp Sherman CG, and Riverside CG. Residents and businesses in the area of these prescribed burns are advised to keep their windows and doors closed during the night hours to avoid potential smoke impacts. If smoke drifts onto local roads, motorists should slow down, turn on headlights, and proceed with care. Once ignited, units are monitored and patrolled until they are declared out, the Forest Service reports.
