Boys cross-country
team coming together
By Charlie Kanzig
Correspondent
After a banner year last
year that included a slew of
freshmen on the varsity team
that won a district title and
competed at the state meet,
this season’s edition of Sisters
High School’s boys cross-
country team faces a new
league and perhaps the stron-
gest 4A team competition in
many years.
With Marist of Eugene
dropping down to the 4A
ranks and five of the top
six teams from last year’s
state championships return-
ing most of their runners,
the Outlaws understand that
every outing this season will
be a challenge. According to
Josh Nordell, head coach, the
boys are up to the task.
At Thursday’s Husky
Invitational in Sweet Home
Nordell got a glimpse of the
hard work some of the boys
put in this summer, including
John Peckham, who placed
second at the meet among 80
finishers in a time of 17:17.
Jedaiah Wasson of 2A East
Linn Christian pulled away
from Peckham in the last half-
mile to win in 17:08.
Ethan Hosang also cracked
the top 10, finishing ninth in
18:31 on the tough 5,000-
meter course. Other finishers
for the team included Sam
May (19:24), Josh Liddell
(20:04), Max Palanuk (20:53),
and Austin Pade (21:56). Will
Thorsett had to pull out of the
race due to a leg injury.
... I liked what I saw,
especially considering
we are truly training
through these first
couple of meets.

Newport won the meet with
55 points, followed by South
Albany (69), Philomath (88),
Lebanon (112), Corvallis
(123) and Sisters (123) among
a total of 11 complete teams.

Outlaws fall in physical contests
By Rongi Yost
Correspondent
The Lady Outlaws fell 1-5
in a road loss to Woodburn
on Tuesday, September 11,
and two days later lost 0-4 at
home against Philomath.
On Tuesday, Sisters scored
their lone goal of the contest
at the 14-minute mark on
an unassisted play. Gracen
Sundstrom stripped the ball
from a Bulldog defender at
about 30 yards out, took one
touch, and blasted in a shot
from 25 yards out that went
past the keeper’s hands and
tucked under the crossbar for
the 1-0 lead.
Woodburn scored five
minutes later, and again five
minutes after that to go up
2-1. They were able to punch
in one more goal and take
a 3-1 lead at the half. The
Bulldogs put two more away
in the second half and posted
the 5-1 win.
“The game was really
physical, and there were lots
of no-calls by the officials,”
said Coach Jaron Jacobsen.
Senior forward Sofia
Affatati said, “We played a
hard game. Sydney Wilkins
(freshman) stepped in as
goalie for the game and

showed she could play at the
varsity level. The goalie posi-
tion is not easy to play, and
she did a great job.”
On Thursday, the Outlaws
played in another very physi-
cal game against Philomath,
and one Sisters player was
forced to leave the field due
to a concussion.
Philomath opened their
scoring at the 15-minute
mark, and then scored again
seven minutes later. At the
half, the Outlaws trailed
0-3. The Warriors tacked on
their final goal in the sec-
ond half and recorded the
victory.
Sisters was to travel
to Stayton on Tuesday,
September 18. The Outlaws
will play at home against
Sweet Home on Thursday.
