At the Husky Invitational, hosted by Sweet Home on Thursday, the Outlaws toed the line for the first time in the 2018 campaign with a goal of checking fitness and race-readiness. Kate Bowen, the Outlaws’ top run- ner, faced off against fellow junior Hannah Hernandez of Philomath. Both are consid- ered among the top 4A run- ners this year and ran the first mile together, but Hernandez gapped Bowen midway in the rugged 5,000-meter (3.1- mile) course and ran to a 50-second victory in 19:41. Bowen (20:31) held on for second place. Corvallis, a 5A school, won the team title with 36 points, followed by Philomath (52), Lebanon (91) Newport (96), Sisters (91), Cascade ( 1 2 8 ) , a n d H a r r i s b u rg (160) among the 16 teams represented at the meet. with the team title with just 44 points among 11 complete teams. Siuslaw finished sec- ond with 79 points, while the Outlaws totaled 190 points to finish eighth. Again it was Bowen at the lead of the Outlaw pack, but she had plenty of fast young women to contend with on her way to eighth place in 19:55, sixth among fellow 4A competitors. Assistant Coach Rima Givot liked what she wit- nessed at Saturday’s meet, saying, “The girls embraced the racing season with deter- mination. It was exciting to see our runners push beyond their comfort zones and lean into the pain of racing Saturday.” The Outlaws race next on Saturday, September 22, at the Seaside Three Course Challenge held at Camp Rilea, just north of Seaside. “The Three Course is a team favorite because of the nature of the different courses, but also because the overnight trip gives the kids a real chance to get to know one another and meld as a team,” said Nordell.
