Sisters coming down with Petty Fever
By Jim Cornelius
Editor in Chief
Petty Fever was one of the
most popular of the tribute
bands that played at Hardtails
Bar & Grill last summer.
Owner Steve Macey is bring-
ing them back this weekend,
by popular demand.
Something significant
has changed between this
summer and last: Tom Petty,
iconic American rock singer-
songwriter who inspires the
music of the tribute band,
died suddenly on October 2,
2017, shortly after wrapping
up a U.S. tour.
Petty’s death was a tre-
mendous blow to Petty Fever
leader Frank Murray, and left
him unsure what direction to
take.
“I wondered if I should be
out playing,” he said.
He got his answer from
grieving Petty fans from
around the world. They want
the music to carry on and
they urged him to keep bear-
ing the torch. Petty’s music
will, of course, continue to be
on playlists as long as classic
American rock music matters
to anyone. But the recordings
are only one aspect of the
music.
The message was clear:
“This music has to be played
live, not just on record,”
Murray said.
So Petty Fever is still on
the road, which will lead
them to Sisters on Saturday
night at 8 p.m. at Hardtails.
Tickets are available in
advance at www.bendticket.
com or at the door if the show
isn’t sold out.
Murray has had Petty
fever himself since he was
young.
“I’ve been playing Petty
songs since they were
(first) on the radio, he told
The Nugget. “I learned
‘Breakdown’ the day after it
came out in 1977.”
He’s been fronting Petty
Fever for the past 10 years.
For Murray, Tom Petty and
the Heartbreakers had just the
right sound and attitude, tap-
ping the same influences that
Murray himself claimed.

“You could just hear it
in his voice,” Murray said.
“Mike Campbell’s guitar
work was always just the
right kind of soul and the
tastiest lick imaginable for
the song. And that’s the kind
of thing I like.”
Like many musicians,
Murray appreciates the
deceptive simplicity of
Petty’s songs, with lyrics that
sneak up on you and always
a perfect rock-and-roll hook.
“They’re just really well-
crafted songs,” he said.
Playing those songs has
always been a joy — and now
its even more meaningful.
“That’s the difference,”
he told The Nugget. “It’s just
a lot more emotional than it
used to be for the audience —
and even for me, too. I feel
a lot more pressure to do it
justice.”
