Ski lodge renovation
gets $20,000 grant
SISTERS (AP) — A
couple hoping to restore a
dilapidated ski lodge west of
Sisters in Central Oregon has
received a $20,000 state grant
to launch the effort.
The Bulletin reports in a
story on Friday that Friends
of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge
received the grant from the
State Historic Preservation
Office.
Salem couple Dwight and
Susan Sheets founded Friends
of Santiam Pass Ski Lodge.
They’re relying on grants
and private donations to raise
the $2 to $3 million to reno-
vate the historic lodge.
They signed a five-year
permit from the U.S. Forest
Service in May to begin work
on the lodge that’s on Forest
Service land. The lodge first
opened in 1940.
The Sheets hope to have
the lodge available for day-
time visits within five years.
Emphasizing bicycle
safety for children
Living in Central Oregon,
there are so many great rea-
sons to ride your bicycle.
Community partners want all
bicyclists to enjoy the fun,
freedom and exercise that
bicycling offers. In order to
help community members
bike safely, the Sisters-Camp
Sherman Fire District is plan-
ning a bicycle safety event.
The bike event will include
bicycle safety inspections
by a certified technician and
a skill station where partici-
pants can ride a cone course.
Participants 16 years or
younger, of low-income fam-
ilies, may be able to receive
a free helmet while supplies
last.
Oregon law requires
bicycle riders 16 years and
younger to wear a helmet.
The event will be on
Saturday, July 21, from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sisters
Park & Recreation
District parking
lot at 1750 W.
McKinney Butte
Rd. in Sisters.
The free event
will also include
face painting,
a dunk tank
where par-
ticipants can
dunk a fire-
fighter, and
popsicles.

Laird Superfood making a big splash

So what does a world-
renowned surfer have to do
with economic impact in
Sisters, Oregon? The answer
to that became more public
as professional surfer Laird
Hamilton’s company, Laird
Superfood, cut the ribbon
on their new facility in the
Sisters Industrial Park
on Monday, July 16, at
a ceremony attended
by civic and company
leaders, as well as
employees, citizens,
and economic develop-
ment strategists.
Hamilton, best known
as a world-class surfer and
fitness guru, was on hand to
take part in the celebration
that may continue for some
time as the company already
has 52 employees based in
Sisters and plans for literally
hundreds more in the years to
come.
The company got its start
after Hamilton developed
the idea of making a more
healthy creamer for cof-
fee, which he successfully
launched as a product about
three years ago. The origi-
nal creamer includes healthy
oils, coconut milk and nec-
tar, along with Aquamin™, a
calcium-rich additive. Since
that time, the company has
expanded to other products,
including high-quality coffee
and performance hydration
supplements.
Paul Hodge, CEO for
Laird Superfood, is pleased to
see his vision coming to frui-
tion. “I moved here in 2011
and I felt it was important to
build something that gives
back to the community and
provides jobs for the people
that want to live here.”
The company opened in
Sisters in November 2015
in the former Metabolic
Maintenance building with
just a small staff led by
Hodge. The City of Sisters
provided $51,000 from the
Economic Development
Loan Fund in December 2016
