The goal of this year’s tour was to have the proper- ties in as close proximity to one another as possible. Tour chairman Donna Lipscom exceeded expectations. Two of the proper- ties are located at the top of McKinney Butte, off Barclay Drive. At the bot- tom of the butte is the Sisters Community Garden where lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Right across Camp Polk Road in the light industrial area is the third home. The other two are just on the out- skirts of town so there are no long driving distances. Three of the properties will be fully open, both garden and house. All of the prop- erties will be adorned with exquisite quilts, which will See GARDEN QUILTS on page 30 PHOTO PROVIDED Sisters quilters collated community comments to produce a quilt that expresses Sisters’ community values. This issue has many facets and affects many stakehold- ers, most of whom were at the table at the June 25 gathering. Representatives invited to participate in the discussion By Sue Stafford Correspondent The collective knowledge and experience represented at the three-hour meeting last week concerning “houseless- ness” challenges in the Sisters community was considerable. Close to 30 people from throughout Deschutes County, as well as Sisters, gathered at Sisters Fire Hall’s community room for a facilitated initial conversation to develop a better shared understanding of the issue, by capturing stakeholders’ concerns and needs, as well as ideas and See HOUSELESS on page 22 Sisters ‘visioning quilt’ debuts By Sue Stafford Correspondent The newly completed Sisters Country Values & Visioning Quilt — which showcases more than 180 community comments — will make its debut next week during the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. The quilt is set to be displayed on the lawn behind Beacham’s Clock Co., near the show’s raffle quilt and information booth. “The quilt is meant to celebrate our community and heritage and to com- memorate the ongoing 2018 visioning process,” said Citizens4Community coor- dinator for the project Amy Burgstahler. This spring, residents from all over Sisters Country inked onto individual quilt squares what they value about Sisters and what their vision for the community is. “Now that all those squares have been assem- bled, it’s fascinating reading it and seeing how the com- ments create this tapestry of community ideas and values in one piece,” Burgstahler said. “It’s one of those things where the sum is even greater than its individual parts. It’s powerful.” The East of the Cascades Quilters, led by Diane Tolzman and Gilda Hunt, teamed on the project to design and sew the quilt. “In addition to all the local relevance built into this quilt, it’s also incredibly artful in its presentation,” Burgstahler said. C4C member Jane Paxson and quilters CeCe Montgomery, Janet Roshak, June Jaeger, Sue Olsen, Janet Storton, Nancy Frazeur, Susan Cobb, Jerry Lindstrom and Joan Santoro also contributed. There’s a little some- thing for everyone on the quilt.
