Los Lobos to join
Sisters blues fest
The organizers of the
Sisters Rhythm and Brews
Festival got some bad news
last week: headliner, the
legendary John Mayall, was
forced to cancel all his shows
through September due to ill
health.
The first-year festival
immediately landed some big
guns to fill Mayall’s shoes
— the equally legendary Los
Lobos will take the stage in
his place during the August
3-4 festival in Sisters.
Festival co-organizer
Jennifer Rambo said that the
initial news was a blow, and
that everyone is concerned
about Mayall’s well-being
first and foremost. When the
questioned turned to how
to handle the impact of the
cancellation, things lined up
brilliantly.
Mayall’s agent helped
facilitate nailing down a
replacement of appropriate
stature.
“We got really, really
lucky,” she said.
She said that she and
her partner Joe are “really
excited” about presenting Los

Council considers
construction excise tax

Camp Road. To qualify for
renting those apartments, an
applicant must earn 60 per-
cent or less of the adjusted

Deschutes County.

Sisters is looking at a tax
to facilitate more affordable
housing.
At the request of the
Sisters City Council, the
City staff has been research-
ing possible implementation
of a construction excise tax
(CET) to help raise money
to encourage and enable con-
struction of both middle- and
low-income housing.
Council recognizes that
growth and affordable hous-
ing are critical issues for
Sisters and have been part of

Habitat for Humanity home
last week with many friends,
volunteers and co-workers in
attendance. The Islas fam-
ily will complete 500 hours
of sweat equity and save
a down-payment prior to
moving in. They will have a
zero-interest 25- to 30-year
affordable mortgage. Their
mortgage payment, includ-
ing taxes and insurance, will
be about $700 per month.
The Islas family has lived
in Sisters for more than 15
years. They are the 67th fam-
ily to purchase a home from
Sisters Habitat since 1991.
This fall, Sisters Habitat
volunteers Jack and Mary
Anne McDonnell will be tak-
ing a team of people to build
homes in Romania as part of a
Habitat for Humanity Global
Village program. The Sisters
Habitat’s board of directors
recently voted to send their
quarterly tithe contribution to
the Habitat Romania affiliate.
As a result of that dona-
tion, Roberto Pătrășcoiu, the
national director for Habitat
Romania, visited Sisters
last week to say thank you.
Pătrășcoiu was in the U.S.
for training at Habitat for
Humanity International in
Atlanta and made a detour
to Oregon to visit Sisters and
another Habitat affiliate in
Hillsboro.
He said he was grateful
for the donation to help fami-
lies in Romania. Here in the
United States many Habitat
organizations are able to
build homes with proceeds
from ReStores in addition
to individual donations and
grants, but affiliates overseas
rely heavily on the U.S. tithe
donations.
All affiliates in the United
States are asked to tithe 10
percent of undesignated cash
contributions toward Habitat
for Humanity’s international
work.
This year, Sisters Habitat
designated its tithe funds to
Romania, Vietnam, and Cote
d’Ivoire. In the past year,
