While perched on the tip
of a branch the ash-throated
flycatcher [Myiarchus cin-
erascens] will tweak its head
from side to side in a quiz-
zical manner as it waits for
its next insect meal. They
prefer drier environs and do
not drink water because all
that is needed are the fluids
from their insect diet. Small
lizards, fruits and berries are
occasionally consumed.
Three to seven brown-
streaked white eggs are laid
after a nest of grasses, twigs,
and rootlets are woven
together and then lined with
animal hairs — most often
rabbit. A quick 15 days and
the hatchlings are ready to
fledge. A diet of beetles,
larva, flies and wasps enable
the chicks to grow quickly
and leave the nest in 17

days. The ash-throated fly-
catcher’s nest is often a pre-
viously used woodpecker or
bluebird cavity, or they may
nest in your mailbox.
A group of flycatch-
ers may be referred to as
a “zipper,” a “zapper,” an
“outfield” or a “swatting” of
flycatchers. To view more

BEND (AP) — A man years, pay $3,000 in restitu-
of fatally shooting a tion to the Trumpeter Swan
BEND (AP) — Authorities
say a Prineville man who ini-
tially said he was the victim
of a drive-by shooting later
admitted that he shot himself in
the leg when he dropped a sto-
len handgun in his apartment.
Prineville police Chief Dale
Cummins tells KTVZ that offi-
cers responded to St. Charles
Prineville late Thursday on the
report of a gunshot victim in
the emergency room.
Investigators were skeptical
it was a drive-by shooting, then
the victim admitted telling the
lie because he’s on post-prison
supervision and not allowed to
possess a firearm.
The .45-caliber 1911 hand-
gun recovered was found to
have been reported stolen.
