Perez-Sanchez, Hartman inspired track and field Sisters

David Perez-Sanchez and
Holland Hartman played inspir-
ing roles in the outstanding 2018
Sisters Outlaws track and field
program.
David Perez-Sanchez has been
one of the Outlaws’ leading throw-
ers for the last three years. In his
two primary events (discus and
shotput) he finished his high school
career with personal records
of 121 feet 5 inches (discus)
and a fifth-place finish for the
Outlaws at the district meet,
and a personal best 38 feet 11
inches in the shotput.
“More importantly, David
has been an outstanding
leader for the team,” said
Coach Jeff Larson. “He rou-
tinely took younger ath-
letes under his wing to
help them improve and
even took an active role
in leading the other
throwers in meet prep-
aration of the throw-
ing areas.”
Larson noted that
Holland Hartman
(pictured left in
photo) is new to track
photo) is new to track
and field and spent the
majority of her season fight-
ing nagging injuries.
“Despite her setbacks, her
positive attitude and desire
to improve impressed the
coaching staff on a daily
basis,” said Larson. “As an
athlete, Holland focused on

200 and 100. At the district meet,
the coaches decided to have her
focus on the 100-meter dash, where
she ran a personal best and helped
contribute to the girls’ fourth
straight team championship.”
The coach said, “David and
Holland will be greatly missed. We
wish them the best of luck in the
future.”
A wonderful opportunity
for local kids is taking place
(again) in Sisters Country:
the Black Butte Eco Bike
Explorers. It’s a grassroots
nonprofit program designed
to get kids outdoors to learn
about ecology and conserva-
tion of our natural treasures
through art and mountain bike
exploration.
It gives kids tools to give
them direction to their lives
and help them improve and
maintain their relationship
with the world around them.
The field trips cover topics
including their impact on the
environment, reduce, reuse,
recycle, learn and respect
natural habitats — and have
lots of summertime fun with
friends while doing it.
The current program is
for kids between the ages of
10-15, and because this is only
their second season, the pro-
gram space will be limited to
8-10 kids. Based on the great
times the kids had last year,
Heather Walden — who got
it going last year and runs it
today — says it can grow with
more volunteers. So, if you’re
