Community Librarian
Paige Bentley-Flannery
serves up a historical fic-
tion recommendation from
the shelves of the Sisters
Library: “Love and Ruin” by
Paula McLain.
When Martha Gellhorn
meets Ernest Hemingway on
a family vacation in Florida,
a writing friendship develops
and eventually evolves into a
passionate love story.
Gellhorn is a journal-
ist and professional writer
of short stories who travels
the world capturing historic
events. She is one of the few
women to be in the middle
of multiple wars where her
compelling journalist style
allows her to report on areas
most correspondents never
see.
When she travels to Spain
to cover the Spanish Civil
War, their love story begins
and years later they marry,
in 1940. As the couple trav-
els the world, Cuba becomes
their sanctuary where they

both can write and find ref-
uge. Gellhorn’s writing
continues to flourish. But
so does Hemingway’s as
he publishes “For Whom
the Bell Tolls.” Can this
journalist and third wife of
Hemingway overcome liter-
ary critics constantly com-
paring her work to the great
American writer?
McLain’s latest historical
novel highlights an adventur-
ous female character who is
relevant today. Readers will
experience her struggles,
success and love of writing.
Curious readers can look for
nonfiction favorites about
Gellhorn or Hemingway
including: “Travels with
Myself and Another: A
Memoir by Martha Gellhorn”
and “Gellhorn: A Twentieth-
Century Life” by Caroline
Moorehead.
Travel the world and fall
in love with best-selling
author McLain’s latest novel.
Her strong, real-life heroine
makes for a perfect summer
read. Visit your local library

fiction books.

City of Sisters to
host barbecue
Citizens of Sisters and
folks from throughout Sisters
Country are invited to come
out to City Hall on Tuesday,
June 19, starting at 4:30 p.m.
The agenda for this meet-
ing includes burgers, hot
dogs, all the fixin’s, local
musicians performing and an
opportunity to talk with city
councilors, city staff and the
facilitators from the Sisters
Country Horizons project.
This is the second annual
barbecue, an event con-
ceived by Councilor Richard
Esterman as a way for the
City to reach out and connect
with the citizens.
The barbecue will run
until 6:30 p.m. in the City
Hall parking lot. City Hall
is located at 520 E. Cascade
Ave.
Representatives from
Sisters Country Horizons
Community Visioning will
be at the barbecue to answer
questions and take input.
The next Sisters Country
Horizons community forum is
set for Monday, June 18, 1 to
4 p.m. The topic is “Resilient
Sisters” and deals with mat-
ters of health and safety. The
meeting will be held at the
Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire
District Community Hall at
301 S. Elm St.
Sisters Country Horizons
is a community visioning pro-
cess designed to help Sisters
Country position itself for
the future — retaining the
things the community values
most while considering what
may need to change going
forward.
The community forums
are designed to take a “deeper
dive” into specific areas of
life in Sisters. The conversa-
tional forums offer an oppor-
tunity for in-depth community
input. That input — along
with that received through
the interviews, survey, and
community meetings — will
go into crafting a community
vision for the future.
A Vision and Action Plan
will be released in late 2018
or early 2019. A citizen-based
Vision Action Team will be
formed later this summer
to steer development of the
plan. Once completed, the
Vision Action Plan is to help
guide government agencies,
nonprofit groups and the pri-
vate sector in planning and
projects.

the barbecue, contact Sisters
City Hall at 541-549-6022.
