Sisters entered the game as the No. 2 team in the Sky-Em, and Newport was No. 3 in their division. Sisters struck first and scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Morgan hit a screaming line drive that flew over the pitcher’s head, into centerfield and scored Austin Morss. That was the one and only run the Outlaws were able to get on the scoreboard. In the top of the third, Newport scored a run on an error and tied it up 1-1. They added three runs in the top of the fifth and took a 4-1 advan- tage; one run on a hit and two on errors. Coach Reed Rainey said, “We just made too many mis- takes, and that’s a sign of our inexperience.” Freshman Emma Farley was thrilled to qualify for this years’ state golf tour- nament, which was held at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15. Emma scored a career-best 89 in round one on Monday. A day later she carded a 106 for a 195 total, to finish 22nd out of 68 players in the tourney. Of her experience Emma said, “I was a little nervous, but I was more excited to play on the course. I’m definitely going to work hard over the summer, and hope to break 85 next year.” Coach Bill Mitchell said, “Emma had a great show- ing for her first time at state. She stayed away from any big numbers on day one, with her highest score on any hole a six. That made all the difference in her round and is the reason she broke 90 for the first time. Her full swing is very good. Her driver and full iron shots are fine; she just needs improve- ment on her chipping and putting. “I’m always amazed at the competitive spirit and cour- age these young golfers dis- play,” added Mitchell. “What a great game, not easy, but great, and not many are up to the challenge.” St. Mary’s took first with a team score of 651, Heppner was runner-up at 737, and Valley Catholic took third at 777.
