Wednesday, May 16, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Pops concert will cap season Student musicians will perform their last concerts after a busy and award-win- ning school year at Sisters’ middle and high schools. The choir department, led by Choir Director Rick Johnson with music assistant Julie Cash, is excited to per- form “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman with the High School Concert Choir, as well as many other favor- ite pop songs with the other choirs in the school district. “The choir students have had an amazing year, and this concert is the culmination of all their hard work,” said Johnson. “This is the most difficult music of the year for every group performing, and they are handling it like professionals. I can’t wait for the public to hear them perform.” Director of Bands Tyler Cranor knows audiences will enjoy the entire program. However, he is especially excited to play Disney film soundtracks because he gets to share some of his child- hood favorites with this gen- eration of students. “It is so fun to be able to put music in front of stu- dents that they can relate to but has been too difficult for them to perform until now,” said Cranor. “The growth of their musicianship this year has been astounding, and this spring concert is a time to have some fun and reap the rewards.” Earlier this year, the Sisters High School Choir attended the Central Oregon festival and received the highest rating at the festival, among any school regardless of size. The Sisters High School Wind Ensemble showed its advancing musicianship by performing challeng- ing pieces at the Central Oregon Band Festival. Three Ensemble members qualified for the state OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) Solo State Championships. Also, the choir and band joined talents for popular performances of the musical Cinderella. Hear the choir and band at their upcoming Spring Pops Concerts. The choir per- forms on Wednesday, May 23, and the band performs on Thursday, May 24. The concerts are at Sisters High School at 7 p.m. Both are free and open to the public. 17 Outlaw Farley qualifies for golf championships By Rongi Yost Correspondent Both the boys and girls golf squads participated in the District Championships this past week, and Emma Farley did an outstanding job. Emma finished fifth overall, was first-team all- district, and qualified for the state tournament, which were to be held in Banks at the Quail Valley Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15. Districts for the girls was held at the Santiam Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday, May 7 and 8. Farley led the Lady Outlaws with a strong start on day one with a 49 on the front nine. She scored a 53 on the back for a 102 total, with pars on holes 3, 8, and 17. On day two, she did even better. Farley carded a 46 on the front nine, and a 49 on the back (95), with five pars, on holes 1, 5, 12, 13, and 17. Farley said, “I just tried not to stress myself out, and that really helped. My drive shots allowed me to get closer to the pin and get lower scores. At the start of the season I was driving the ball 180 yards, and now I can drive it 250 yards, so that’s made a big difference in my game. I really didn’t think I’d make it to state because I didn’t do very well on day one. But, I’m so excited I made it! I’m kind of nervous because most players I’ll be against are seniors and DON’T MISS this week’s inserts! RAY’S FOOD PLACE BIG, JUICY, and Seedless! AriAnne Griffy had a birdie on hole 17 to highlight her round on day one (109), and on day two she carded a 122. Emilie Turpen shot a 163 on day one and a 140 on day two. Blanchet Catholic/Salem Academy (BC/SA) finished first with a team score of 778, Taft was runner-up at 786, and Waldport took third at 837. The boys golf squad held their district tournament at Tokatee. Stayton took first (681), Sweet Home placed second (727), and Cascade took third (741). Mitchell said, “I’m so proud of Patrick who scored a 57 on the front nine, with three eights out of the nine holes. He easily could have scored in the forties.” On day two, Mitchell gave Schmidt and Dingeman a break, and Connor Crowe and Felix Leahey stepped in at the fourth and fifth spots. Myhre led the Outlaws with a 94, which included three pars, and Hernandez followed with a 99. Smeltzer had a birdie on the fourth hole to highlight his round (107). Leahey carded a 128, and Crowe rounded out the scores with a 143. “Peyton and Wyatt had good front nines,” said Mitchell. “In two years, Peyton has really improved. We need to see this kind of progress across the board. Overall, the results weren’t great. The bottom line is we need to put in the time this summer, and work hard to get better. We’ll see who’s up for the challenge. “The boys who didn’t get to play just need to get better, and there’s no easy answer, and there are no short-cuts,” added Mitchell. “I’m especially proud of Dylan Vantress. He’s had a great year and has really improved. I’m counting on him to be in the top five next year.” Get Ready for Summer Travel Call to have your brakes, alignment and suspension checked now.
