Wednesday, May 9, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Marking Historical Preservation Month By Sue Stafford Correspondent May is National Historic Preservation Month here in Sisters, throughout Deschutes County, and across the U.S. There’s a month’s worth of activities for people to partici- pate in and historic places to visit throughout the county. This Place Matters, spon- sored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a national campaign to encour- age preservation of impor- tant historic structures and sites in our local community. During May, and beyond, check out what is being done to preserve the heritage of Central Oregon. Visit www. deschuteshistory.org/historic- preservation-month for a full schedule of events. Sisters lost so many of its earliest buildings in the two fires of 1923 and 1924, leaving very few heritage sites still standing. Among those remaining are the buildings currently housing Sisters Bakery, Drawstrings of Malibu, Sisters Saloon & Ranch Grill, and Sisters HomeLand Realty, as well as the Sisters School District Administration building. The Three Sisters Historical Society plans to bring historic Sisters alive through photographs, oral histories, walking tours, and educational events for old and young throughout the sum- mer. On Monday, May 14, 7 p.m. at FivePine Conference Center, the historical society will be hosting the Friends of the Santiam Pass Ski Lodge, a preservation project being undertaken in our own back- yard. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free to the public. On Friday, May 25, 4 to 7 p.m., experience “Cowboys and Settlers in Sisters.” As part of the Fourth Friday Art Stroll in Sisters, come view the artwork of cowboy artist Len Babb and meet the art- ist. The art will be on display in the 1908 home of Sisters early settler, stockman, black- smith, and businessman Hardy Allen. Current owner of the house, Ali Mayea of Sisters HomeLand Realty, will pro- vide refreshments and give guided tours. Get a glimpse of early-day Sisters, learn about the Three Sisters Historical Society (that will be offering for sale a few historic framed photos of Sisters), and view Babb’s work that reflects the life of the working cowboy, so much a part of the history of Central Oregon. The house is located at 401 E. Main Ave. Worth a trip to Redmond is a stop at the old Evergreen School (originally Redmond Union High School) that has been preserved and beauti- fully restored to serve as Redmond’s new City Hall at 411 SW 9th St. The interior walls are covered with large photos from old RHS year- books. Vintage details have been either preserved or rep- licated to maintain the build- ing’s historic integrity while offering the latest in technol- ogy and energy conservation. Three Sisters Historical Society has partnered with Deschutes County Historical Society, Deschutes County Historic Landmarks Commis- sion, the Landmark Commis- sions of Bend and Redmond, Deschutes Public Library, Bowman Museum and the Deschutes Land Trust to dem- onstrate how historic preser- vation enhances quality of life. Cascade Ave., Sisters • 541-549-2631 9 Students’ musicianship recognized Three Sisters High School students were recognized for their musicianship at the state level recently. These mem- bers of the wind ensemble competed in the Central Oregon Solo and Ensemble Festival and received state qualifying scores for their instruments, meaning they were eligible to advance to the state competition. Junior Dalton Gonzales on trumpet, freshmen Connor Martin on alto saxophone, and Jack Ogan on tuba were the students who earned kudos for their individual musician- ship. Ogan was the only auto- matic qualifier because he took first place at the district festival. Gonzales and Martin were both listed as alternates, and eventually Gonzales was selected to represent Central Oregon at the state festival. The OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) Solo State Championships took place at Pacific University in Forest Grove at the end of April. Tyler Cranor, director of bands for Sisters School District, keeps all of his stu- dent musicians busy perform- ing at district festivals, honor bands, school performances, and community events such as the My Own Two Hands parade. He was impressed that these students also found the time to learn new music and try out for the state competition. “These three students have really set the bar high for the future of this program. The PHOTO PROVIDED Jack Ogan, Connor Martin, and Dalton Gonzales are headed to state competition. fact that all three qualified glimpse at what we could for state, two as freshmen, is sound like with time and hard really quite astounding,” said work,” said Gonzales.
