20 Wednesday, April 4, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Alana Lukens Sisters High School March 2018 Student of the Month For Alana Lukens, every person she comes into contact with is important. She is exceptionally committed to her community and her school. Alana has served for a long time as a choir program intern, helping teach students at Sisters Middle School. She is also interning with the Life Skills program and serves on the Deschutes County Health Department’s Drug Prevention Team. She also participates in Mr. SHS. “I think we’ve got a lot of awe- some opportunities here,” she says of a school system she lauds because it “treats you like an individual.” Alana will travel to the United King- dom next year to study at the Univer- sity of Chester in the honors program for social work. It’s an opportunity to venture out from the community that has nurtured her her whole life to ex- perience the broader world. She’s appreciative of all the support she has received in making school a success. “I’d like to thank all of my teachers and my parents and my sister,” she said. “I owe a lot of it to them.” “Alana Lukens is one of the most tal- ented and giving students I have ever worked with. She has been involved in the Sisters School District music pro- gram for 8+ years and is the current high school choir president. Alana has worked with the middle school choirs as a high school mentor 4 times and has been seen in middle school choir con- certs many times as an assistant choral conductor – leading a song for the 6th- grade choir. She marvelously played the lead role in this year’s musical theater production of Cinderella. Two years ago, she played the very diffi cult lead role of Little Sally in our production of Urinetown. Alana has also written some amazing songs in the Americana Proj- ect. It has been a privilege to work with her over the years. Her future is very bright!” — Rick Johnson “Alana is a great person! I love how she has carried herself through her 4 years at SHS. She is a student, a per- former, a helper, and a wonderful role model for other students at SHS. I look forward to what the future has for her!” — Kristy Rawls “What can I say about Alana? She is totally amazing! I’ve had the honor and pleasure of knowing her for the past four years through Chinese classes and through her music. Each year she has accom- plished more and more, and now she’s off to England for college! The world awaits you, girl! Go get em! Way to go, Alana!” — David Perkins “Alana Lukens is an indepen- dent learner whose creativity and open-mindedness will serve her well as she moves into the world be- yond high school. She is tremendously thoughtful and loyal and lives her life with integrity.” — Charlie Kanzig “I have had the opportunity to get to know Alana in several settings. It has been fun to watch her blossom from a quiet, unsure girl to a poised, self-as- sured young lady. I have witnessed her leading and teaching peers, both in and outside of class. I have seen her positive- ly and professionally interact with teach- ers and other adults. As a student, she is inquisitive and insightful. She takes her responsibilities and learning seriously. The unique voice of this young lady is apparent in all she does.” — Samra Spear These businesses have joined The Nugget in supporting our youth and their accomplishments by co-sponsoring the Student of the Month program. “Th e best way to predict the future is to create it.” — Abraham Lincoln 541-595-3838 The Ranch 541-549-5555 in Sisters| blackbutte.com Climb High, Climb Far 103 E.
