Wrestlers wrap up regular season

The Outlaws wrestling
squad had two dual matches
this past week to wrap up
their regular season.
Sisters hosted Cottage
Grove on Tuesday, January
30, and two days later trav-
eled to Elmira. The Outlaws
fell 42-36 to the Lions, and
suffered a 54-18 loss to
Elmira.
At home on Tuesday
before the meet, the squad
honored their eight senior
players: Damien Wills, Dustin
Smith, Jake Stevens, David
Perez-Sanchez, Chayce
Sproat, Patrick Dingeman,
Casey Warburton, and Cole
Pade.
Seniors Pade, Smith, and
Sproat all did an incredible
job, and won their matches.
Pade (145 pounds) went
all three rounds with his
opponent, and it was a tight
match all the way. At the end
of the first round, the match
was tied 2-2, and after the
second round, Cole held a
slim 7-6 lead. Pade finished
strong in the final round and
won in a 14-7 decision.
Smith (152 pounds) held
an 11-4 lead at the end of the
second round, and won in the
third round in a 15-10 major
decision.
Smith commented on his
match.
“It was a hard third
round,” said Smith. “I scored
a lot of my points by using
his momentum when he went
forward. I was able to get
an under-hook on his armpit
to come towards me to get a
single-leg.”
Sproat (182 pounds) didn’t
waste any time on the mat.
Chayce took control from the
start and quickly pinned his
opponent in the first round.
Sophomore Ethan Martin
(195 pounds) also came out
on top. The score was tied 0-0
at the end of the first round,
but Ethan came out strong
in the second, and made it
look easy when he pinned his
opponent with 38 seconds left
on the clock.
Jesse Peskin (113 pounds)
earned the pin with one sec-
ond left in the first round of
the match.
“Jesse is definitely becom-
ing a vital part of this varsity
team,” said Downs.
Dalton Ford (126 pounds),
and Sonny Magnuson (132
pounds) both won by forfeit.
Senior Dustin Smith
shared his thoughts on the
Outlaws’ progress.
“I think our team is doing
fairly well, especially the
conditioning,” said Smith.
“We’re a fairly young team. A
lot of our varsity starters are
young or new to wrestling.”
Two days later, the
Outlaws wrestled in a dual
against the Falcons at Elmira.
Freshman Jesse Peskin
(113 pounds) wrestled a
tough match, but lost in a 7-5
decision.
Downs said, “Jesse looked
great on the mat. Even with
the close loss, we all thought
Jesse did an amazing job. It
was the first match I’ve seen
him fight all three rounds,
and I could start to see that
spark of a wrestler not want-
ing to lose in him. From the
beginning of the season up
to this match, it’s been great
to see his improvement, from
not knowing anything about
wrestling to becoming one of
the best on the team.”
Chaz Patterson (120
pounds), another freshman,
did a great job, and won his
match in an 11-5 decision.
“Chaz had a rocky sea-
son at the 126-pounds weight
class, but earned himself a
varsity spot at 120 pounds,”
said Downs. “He’s been
working hard in practice, and

it showed with his tough-
fought win that went all three
rounds.
Sophomore Ethan Martin
(195 pounds) won his match
in an 11-8 decision.
“Ethan won, but this
time he had to fight all three
rounds,” said Downs. “I don’t
think Ethan has worked that
hard in a match this year. I am
glad he had this tough match
to prep him for the Regional
Championships that are com-
ing up. He now understands
what he will be facing.”
Two seniors, Dustin Smith
and Cole Pade, finished their
regular season with great
wins. Both matmen domi-
nated their opponents and
won by fall.
“This was a tough trip for
the Outlaws,” said Downs.
“We had some great matches,
even though they ended as
losses,” said Downs.
“It’s been a great sea-
son for us, and the guys are
starting to peak at just the
right time for the Regional
Championships coming
up next weekend in Sweet
Home.”
The
Regional
Championships will be held
in Sweet Home on Friday and
Saturday, February 9-10.
