Mild winter OK for
local businesses
Sisters Folk Festival, the
coming holiday and winter
season held out high hopes
for what many looked for-
ward to as an opportunity to
get back on their feet.
But response to the holi-
day season has brought
mixed reports. In contrast to
last year’s heavy snowfall,
the mild appearance of win-
ter this year has increased
the number of people walk-
ing the streets of Sisters.
Visitors continued to flood
in and found the relatively
mild weather an opportunity
to shop without the arctic
experience of last year. But

Many local businesses
found the holiday season to
be good — but not the jolt
they were hoping for after
a difficult and disappoint-
ing ending to the summer.
With tourists and visitor
traffic, sidewalks and busi-
nesses saw a steady flow of
customers for the month of
December, but nothing out of
the ordinary.
The end of the summer
left many businesses in the
red, and not just from the fire
and ash. After a disappoint-
ing eclipse experience and
the cancellation of the annual

SPRD seeks volunteer
board member
The Sisters Park &
Recreation District (SPRD)
is looking for an individual
interested in serving on the
board of directors.
The board consists of five
members. Board meetings are
generally held on the second
and fourth Tuesday of the
month at 5:30 p.m. All board
members must be registered
voters and reside within the
district.
The open position was
vacated by Jeff Campbell,
who stepped down to focus
on a campaign to win voter
approval for a 15-cent-per
$1,000 local option assess-
ment for the District in the
May election.
Since the position has
become vacant in the middle
of an elected term, the board
will appoint a candidate.
If the appointed candidate
would like to continue serv-
ing on the board, they will
have to be voted in during
the next board election cycle,

New pistorical society forms
The Three Sisters
Historical Society was
birthed when five local
Sisters women discovered
their shared interest in the
history of Sisters and they
have been working for the
past eight months to get it
established.
When history teacher
Becky Lukens moved to
Sisters in August 2016 with
her family, one of her first
endeavors in becoming
acquainted with her new sur-
roundings was to read about
the history and geography of
the area.
“Paulina Springs Books
set me up with ‘That Was
Yesterday’ (the consummate
history of early Sisters) and
‘The Biography of a Place’ (a
natural history of Camp Polk
Meadow along Whychus
Creek, north of town),”
Lukens said.
Longtime Sisters resident
Kathy Cooper has had an
ongoing love affair with the
history of the Oregon Trail,
which her ancestors trav-
eled in the late 1840s to set-
tle in the Willamette Valley.
For Cooper, “the history of
Central Oregon, and specifi-
cally the Crossroads area of
Sisters, is an extension of the
Oregon Trail story.”
Karen Swank is a certi-
fied genealogist and lover
of old things, who has put
her talents and interests to
work researching the early
families who settled Sisters.
While volunteering at the Des
Chutes Historical Museum,
she has secured over 200
photographs of the earli-
est days in Sisters from the
museum’s archives.
Zeta Seiple, who with her
husband, Richard, moved
to Sisters 14 years ago
from California, loves “old
stuff,” local museums and
the history of small towns.
She served on the board of
the former Sisters Country
Historical Society, which was
disbanded several years ago.
She has continued to see the
need for a historical society
in Sisters. She worked with
Jean Nave, the founder of
the former society, to secure
objects, photos, interviews,
and printed material from the
previous organization.
