18 Wednesday, January 3, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Oregon’s Bottle Bill gets big expansion More kinds of bottles will be worth saving and redeem- ing for a deposit refund this year. As of January 1, 2018, additional beverages are included in Oregon’s Bottle Bill and will have a refund value of 10 cents per container According to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC), which manages the program, most beverages in bottles and cans that are sold in sealed glass, metal, and plastic sizes from 4 ounces up to 1.5 liters will be included. The refund value on all beverages included in Oregon’s Bottle Bill is 10 cents regardless of what is written on the label. Manufacturers have until January 1, 2019 to include the 10-cent refund value on con- tainers for the new beverages. According to OLCC, the rule of thumb is that: “Generally, if you can pour it and drink it, it’s covered unless it’s one of the spe- cifically excluded beverages (distilled spirits, wine, milk, infant formula, and meal replacement beverages). Examples of common bev- erages that are INCLUDED in container sizes 4 ounces up to 1.5 liters: • Coffee/tea (even if they contain milk); • Energy and sports drinks; • Fruit and vegetable juice; • Juice smoothies; • Aloe vera juice; • Coconut water; • Non-alcohol wine; • Drinking vinegar; • Hard cider if 8.5 percent ABV or less; • Marijuana beverages; • Muscle Milk; • Protein shakes (unless sold as a meal replacement); • Kombucha (although alcoholic kombucha made with cane sugar will not be included); • Cocktail mixers (ready to drink) like margarita mix or Bloody Mary mix. In gen- eral, these include: ready-to- use mixers, smoothie mixers, juices (except for lime and lemon juice). Beverages 3 liters or less in size: • Soda (carbonated/spar- kling beverages); • Beer; • Water. Beverages NOT Included: • Distilled spirits; • Wine; • Mead; • Hard cider over 8.5 per- cent ABV; • Milk (dairy and plant-based); • Flavored milk; • Buttermilk; • Lactose-free milk; • Cultured milk; • Kefir; • Infant formula; • Meal-replacement drinks (like Ensure or Boost); • Concentrated beverages; • Lemon/lime juice; • Frozen juice concentrate; • Concentrated coffee/tea; • Concentrated cocktail mixers; • Syrups/flavorings; • Triple sec; • Grenadine; • Bitters; • Shrubs; • Coffee creamers; Non-beverage foods: • Condiments (like soy sauce); • Olive oil; • Vinegar (except for drinking vinegar); • Beverages sold in growl- ers, boxes, pouches, or pack- aging requiring a tool.
