Work crews labored under winter conditions to get Highway 22 open
before the Christmas holidays.
HIGHWAY 22:
Crash caused
fuel spill and fire
Continued from page 3
58-year-old Ronald Edward
Scurlock from Redmond. He
was pronounced dead at the
scene.
Fuel spilled from the
tanker seeped into the soil
along the Santiam River,
though testing showed no
gasoline in the river itself.
Crews had to remove con-
taminated soil and repair
the roadway where the
crash and fire had damaged
pavement.

Grand
jury rules
Klamath Falls
shooting
justified
KLAMATH FALLS (AP)
— A grand jury has cleared
a Klamath Falls police offi-
cer in a fatal shooting last
month.
The Herald and News
reports the Klamath County
jury examined video foot-
age of the Nov. 24 shoot-
i n g i n w h i c h O ff i c e r
Taylor Herbst shot Emilio
Hernandez, who was wanted
on suspicion of attempted
murder.
Eyewitnesses said that
Hernandez ignored orders
to surrender and struggled
with Herbst on the ground.
When Hernandez got up
and fled, the officer opened
fire.
Relatives of Hernandez
said the officer was wrong
to shoot a fleeing subject,
but the grand jury decided
Herbst’s actions were within
the law.
Klamath Falls Police
Chief Dave Henslee said he
was pleased with the find-
ing. He said the depart-
ment will respond to con-
cerns from a family whose
home was struck by bullets,
and the city will pay for
repairs.
we’ll update our master facil-
ities plan, continue due dili-
gence, conduct a school-wide
“Mission and Vision” exer-
cise with an outside facili-
tator and solicit additional
community input as we con-
tinue to strive to keep Sisters
School District the best in
Central Oregon.
Watch for information
regarding a community open
house in the New Year.
Sisters schools are among
the best in the state for many
reasons — our teachers, par-
ents, classified staff, admin-
istrators, volunteers, commu-
nity members and students
are the real drivers of our
success. It does take a village.
I wish you all a happy (and
restful) holiday break and
look forward to a great 2018.
