Fuel tanker wreck closes Highway 22
The Highway 22 route
into the Willamette Valley
was closed last weekend —
and will remain so for an
extended period of time.
The highway in Santiam
Canyon will remain closed
between milepost 55 at the
east end of Idanha to the
Santiam Junction where
Highway 22 and Highway
20 intersect. The closure will
extend indefinitely due to
damage caused by a fuel spill
from a tanker trailer crash
late Friday night at milepost
63. It is estimated that almost
11,600 gallons of unleaded
gasoline spilled. ODOT was
on scene to assess the damage
to the road and determining
what repairs will be needed.
On Friday, December
15 at approximately 11
p.m., Oregon State Police
responded to the report of a
crash on Highway 22 near
milepost 64 involving a 2001
Kenworth Central Petro fuel
truck.
Preliminary investigation
revealed that the vehicle lost
traction on the icy road and
rolled over, coming to a stop
blocking the highway. The
fuel tank ruptured and caught
fire, spreading to nearby
brush.
The driver of the fuel
truck was identified as
58-year-old Ronald Edward
Scurlock from Redmond. He
was pronounced dead at the
scene.
An Idanha-Detroit Fire
Protection District fire engine
that was responding to the
scene also lost control on
the icy road and rolled onto
its side. The driver was unin-
jured. There were additional
collisions in the area that
resulted in no injuries.
A Sisters Fire unit was
dispatched for mutual aid but
was called off before reach-
ing the scene.
Sisters Habitat for Humanity hosted its annual shopping session
with Santa last week.
