native vegetation over the
next year,” the Land Trust
reports.
The homesite features an
underground spring that was
lined with rocks. The spring
lay under the kitchen, where,
according to Janet Hodgers,
the great-great granddaugh-
ter of Martha Hindman, there
was a trapdoor and a cage
system so the family could
use the cool chamber to store
their dairy goods.
The house, which was torn
down in 1960, was two stories
tall and had three bedrooms.
It had likely been added on to
over many years.
The barn and the house
site was part of Hindman
Station, a historic stopping
place along the Santiam
Wagon Road, which in the
1860s onward connected east-
ern and central Oregon to the
more developed Willamette
Valley.
