Firefighter returns to
work after accident
A local firefighter injured
six months ago in a 40-foot
fall has returned to work.
Captain Thornton Brown
of the Sisters-Camp Sherman
RFPD was canyoneering
in Hades Canyon in Death
Valley with two other fire-
fighters when he fell during
a rappel. Captain Brown’s
injuries prevented him from
continuing the hike out and
he had to spend the night in
the remote canyon. Rescuers
with the California Highway
Patrol Inland Division Air
Operations (H-80) were
notified of the accident and
conducted an air rescue uti-
lizing a helicopter.
A link to the video of the
rescue may be found with the
online version of this story at
www.nuggetnews.com.

Captain Brown has endured
medical treatments and
extensive physical therapy.
Throughout the recovery
process Captain Brown was
determined to make a full
recovery and get back to
work on the fire engine.

Getting prepared
for winter
By Jim Cornelius
Editor
Folks in Sisters Country
are coming to grips with
a stark reality: Winter is
coming.
In fact, regardless of the
calendar, we’ve already
seen snowfall and tempera-
tures dropping into the teens
overnight. The great fear, of
course, is that we will see a
repeat of the heavy winter
Sisters endured last year.
The best way to relieve
anxiety in anticipation of
winter is to get prepared.
Sisters residents learned
— or re-learned — some
hard lessons last winter. The
most important one is that we
have to clear the snow off our
roofs and keep it cleared. The
greatest damage last winter
occurred due to the accu-
mulation of snow on roofs,
which led to ice damming,
which led to sometimes cata-
strophic leakage.
“Get that snow off your
roof — really,” says Paul
Ryan of Bison Construction
in Sisters.
That means getting a rake
out, or getting up on your

ASPIRE program helps students plan
By Charlie Kanzig
Correspondent
Navigating the curvy
and bumpy road of planning
for life after high school is
not something students are
expected to do alone. For
seniors, looking to “next
year” is the first time they
don’t have a clear picture of
the future. Fourth-graders go
to fifth grade. Eighth-graders
go to high school. But for
seniors, the next step may be
anything but clear.
That is where the ASPIRE
program comes into play at
Sisters High School. Led by
coordinator Rick Kroytz and
his band of volunteers, seniors
and juniors have the opportu-
nity for one-on-one mentoring
related to post-high-school
plans.
There are currently over
140 ASPIRE sites in Oregon,
and Kroytz is doing all he
can to meet the mission of
the program, which is to
help students explore edu-
cation and training options
beyond high school, develop
a plan for post-high-school,
receive assistance with essays
and applications, help stu-
dents meet deadlines, access
resources about college
choices, and receive direc-
tion to scholarship and other
financial aid resources.
ASPIRE is associated with
the Oregon Higher Education
Coordinating Commission
and the Office of Student
Access and Completion
(OSAC) based in Eugene,
which helps coordinate
state-wide scholarship oppor-
tunities for high school gradu-
ates in Oregon.
Kroytz, in his third year
at the helm, provides training
for adult volunteers (ASPIRE
mentors) in order for them
to more effectively provide
guidance toward college,
technical/vocational training,
career readiness, and more
so that every graduate leaves
with a plan for post-high-
school life.
There are currently 34
mentors trained and working
with juniors and seniors this
year, which is a very healthy
number compared to other
ASPIRE programs in Oregon,
but Kroytz is actually recruit-
ing for more.
