Transgender inmate settles
lawsuit over medical care
Redmond superintendent
bans classroom pets
REDMOND (AP) —
When an Oregon superinten-
dent heard of another school
district being sued recently
for an incident related to an
animal, it prompted him to
recall his own district policy
on animals.
The Bend Bulletin reports
Redmond School District
Superintendent Mike
McIntosh, during a school
board meeting last week, said
the district’s insurance doesn’t
cover class pets.
So McIntosh updated the
district’s practice to match
board policy, which allows
only for service animals and
animals on a temporary basis
related to curriculum to be
allowed in district facili-
ties. Classroom pets are not
allowed.
School board policy says
teachers are considered the
owners of class pets, some-
thing McIntosh says most
teachers didn’t realize until
recently.
Aid-in-dying law turns 20
PORTLAND (AP) —
Oregon’s Death with Dignity
Act is now 20 years old.
Voters approved the aid-
in-dying proposal in 1994
and it then survived a repeal
effort. The law that took
effect October 27, 1997, made
Oregon the first state to make
it legal for a doctor to pre-
scribe a life-ending drug to a
terminally ill patient of sound
mind who makes the request.
It took more than a decade for
another state to follow.
The Oregon Health
Authority says more than
1,100 people used the law to
die through the end of 2016.
The median age was 71, and
most suffered from cancer.

Corrections has settled a law-

she was denied hormone
treatment and counseling.
