The boys soccer team
suffered a devastating 2-0
shutout at Cottage Grove on
Thursday, October 5.
Cottage Grove scored their
first goal off a long ball in
the 15th minute of play, and
another off a miscommuni-
cation 15 minutes later. The
Lions held the 2-0 lead to the
final whistle.
Sisters dominated posses-
sion in the second half, but
couldn’t find the net.
Coach Rob Jensen com-
mented on a few players, as
well as the loss.
“Skyler (Larson) played
great and really made it
tough on the Cottage Grove
midfield,” said Jensen.
“The outside backs, Brogan
( P etter s on) an d Willie
(Stewart) played inspired as
well. It was one of our best

When logging was a big
part of our economy, fuels
reduction resulted from tree
removal. If a fire did start, the
Forest Service would recruit
the loggers already in the for-
est to jump on the fire and put
it out before it could spread to
thousands of acres, according
to Walden.
The economic impact of
the fire on local businesses
was similar across the board.
Fewer tourists meant less
business, reduced income,
cancelled reservations,
employee layoffs, and insti-
tuting winter hours a month
early in some cases.
“Perfect storm” was used
to describe the combination of
events that have hit the Sisters
business community in the
pocketbook. The heavy win-
ter snow kept tourists away.
The extreme hype regarding
expected crowds for the solar
eclipse resulted in low tourist
numbers.
The Milli Fire and others
in the area, with their dense
smoke, and misleading media
information outside the area,
led to disappointing numbers
for Labor Day weekend. The
ODOT sign near Eugene indi-
cating that the road to Sisters
was closed didn’t clarify
it was 242 that was closed
and not 126. The fire and
smoke dragged on, requiring

“We were disappointed to
have to cancel, but I think it
meant a lot more to the com-
munity (in terms of impact)
than it did to us,” she said.
She said that an economic
impact study conducted sev-
eral years ago indicated the
SFF brought $1.2 million into
the local economy over four
days.
“For us it was sad, but the
impact is greater and broader
than just one event,” she
added.
Another topic on which
there was general agreement
was that a lack of available
resources at the outbreak of
the Milli Fire allowed it to
grow quickly in size. Walden
thinks it would be beneficial
for the Forest Service to have
priority leasing agreements
for expensive resources nec-
essary to fight forest fires,
like helicopters and air tank-
ers. Rather than spending
millions of dollars to pur-
chase equipment, which may
sit unused in low fire years,
put the money into leas-
ing equipment when it is
needed.
Forest fires are a part
of life in Central Oregon.
Business owners told Walden
they would like to see a more
practical approach to forest
management and post-fire
salvage.
