Ethan Ferwalt
Sisters High School September 2017 Student of the Month
Ethan Ferwalt always tries to make the
classroom environment better. Heʼs outgo-
ing and sociable and goes out of his way
to treat his peers and teachers with respect.
That striving nature is evident on the
stage, where he is working on the role of
the Princeʼs Steward in the Sisters High
School production of the musical “Cinder-
ella.” Heʼs also about to test for his black
belt in taekwondo, which he has practiced
for the past eight or nine years. He worked
last summer in outdoor services at Aspen
Lakes Golf Course.
Ethan has been in Sisters since the third
grade. He notes that small schools often
lack resources while big schools can be
impersonal. In Sisters, a supportive com-
munity provides educational resources in
a small, intimate environment where stu-
dents and teachers all know each other.
“Sisters really is unique,” he says.
Ethan is working on his future plans:
“Living the dream would be MIT, electri-
cal engineering and computer science.”
“Ethan Ferwalt is an incredible multi-
talented kid. Beyond his high aptitude in
core classes, he has greatly excelled in the
performing arts. Ethan has helped lead the
high school Jazz Choir and Concert Choir
with his strong bass voice and encouraging
leadership skills for four years. He stole the
show with his dictator-like character in the
2015 school musical Urinetown. He has also
written many successful songs in the Ameri-
cana Project. Be sure to attend the high
school musical Cinderella this November
to see him portray the comic character Lio-
nel. Keep your ears open at school sporting
events - you might just hear him singing the
National Anthem before the game. Congratu-
lations Ethan!”
—Rick Johnson
“Ethan stands out as a student for count-
less reasons. For starters, heʼs naturally ad-
ept at multiple subjects, including math, sci-
ence, English, and music. In addition, heʼs in-
credibly industrious — he works hard to suc-
ceed each and every day. But the thing that
always impresses me the most about Ethan is
his intellectual humility. He carefully listens
to outside opinions; he thoughtfully consid-
ers multiple perspectives; and he constantly
looks to learn something new. Heʼs a special
student who defi nitely deserves this award.”
— Matt Bradley
“Congratulations, Ethan! Ethan em-
braces what he is learning and doing fully.
He brings so much to our community. From
band to chess club to taekwondo to his con-
stant contribution to elevating the learning
environment and keeping the focus on
expanding his learning, Ethan sets a
high standard for himself and his peers.
I really appreciate his deep value of
learning and his ability to encourage
his peers to connect to the content,
too. Ethan also cares about his com-
munity, as is evident by his kind nature
and acceptance of diverse views and
people. He treats those around him
with respect and acceptance. We are
so fortunate to have Ethan be a part of
our community! I wish him the best!”
— Rima Givot
“Ethan is one of the most curious
and generous students I know. His
sense of humor is amazing. My day is
brightened when I see Ethan and that is not
just because he wears orange.”
— Daniel OʼNeill
“Ethan is incredibly hardworking and
passionate. He brings a spark to the class-
room and special energy to the hallways and
his extra-curricular commitments.”
— Jami Lyn Weber
“Ethan is an outstanding young man who
is quick to help out any time he is asked. He
contributes greatly to help making Sisters
High School what it is today, and we are
blessed to have him in our school!”
— Gary Thorson
“Ethan greets us daily with a smile and
positive conversation. He is enthusiastic
about his meal and willing to try new things.
Ethan always shares his honest opinion,
which is appreciated. We look forward to
seeing him daily as his booming energy is
always welcome. Thank you and congratula-
tions, Ethan!”
— Terri Rood
“Ethan is a Renaissance Man to be sure.
He does many things well and has loads of
personality, too. What a great choice for stu-
dent of the month.”
