HOOD RIVER (AP) —
Growing wildfires forced
about 140 hikers in Oregon to
shelter in place overnight on
a popular trail about 90 miles
(144.83 kilometers) east of
Portland after they got stuck
between two blazes.
The
Oregonian /
OregonLive reported a new
fire ignited about 4 p.m.
Saturday about a mile up
the Eagle Creek Trail from
the Eagle Creek Trailhead.
Further up the trail, another
fire was burning.
Fire spokeswoman Mary
Huels said a crew of about
18 firefighters who had been
assigned to the south end of
the older fire as lookouts
were keeping track of the
people in the area and getting
them to safe areas.
Search and rescue crews
planned to help the hikers
evacuate Sunday.
Three other hikers in a dif-
ferent area nearby were res-
cued by helicopter Saturday
evening.

ested in working toward that

The steering committee
will conduct research on gaps
for service, encourage collab-
orative efforts, identify fund-
ing, and plan the Community
Conversation
this
fall.
A meeting of many pro-
viders of services to seniors
in Sisters was held on August
24 at the Episcopal Church
of the Transfiguration, hosted
by Father Joseph Farber.
Information was shared
by 35 attendees about the
many resources present in
SPRD and Heather Miller of
the Sisters-Camp Sherman
fire department told of plans
for the Senior Health Fair to
be held on October 20 at a
location to be determined. It
will be an opportunity for all
citizens of Sisters to inves-
tigate what resources are
available to Sisters’ seniors
and others to live in this
community into their older
ages. Senior Alliance will
have a booth there, among
others.
Developer Peter Hoover
announced at the August 24
meeting that he is planning to
break ground for an assisted
living facility as soon as he
contracts with a construc-
tion company. He hopes that
takes place soon and comple-
tion can be late summer or
fall of 2018.
In other news, Mosaic
Medical Center in Bend
will send a mobile medical
van to service Sisters twice
a week. It is to be parked at
the Sisters Kiwanis Food
Bank.
