Rodeo provides money
for community support
Sisters Rodeo Association
is vested in supporting its
community and many com-
munities throughout Oregon.
On August 12, at the
annual appreciation party
for volunteers, the rodeo
raised $4,000 for Warfighter
Outfitters with auction of a
table hand-crafted by vet-
eran Gary Conner, a member
of both organizations. In a
spirit of generosity, the table
was auctioned for $750, then
turned back to sell again —
a total of three times — to
reach that financial goal.
Youth Build of Oregon
Sisters received $2,000 with
auction of a contestants-
signed and framed 2017
rodeo poster. Another $526
was raised for Sisters Cold
Weather Shelter. With a dona-
tion of Portland Trailblazer
tickets by Columbia
Distributors, another $500
was raised, which will go
into the rodeo’s donation
budget.
The rodeo donated $3,564
in tickets to charitable orga-
nizations across the state,
from schools to chambers of

UK crew learn about
wildland firefighting
Daniel Maidment — all
from Hampshire in southern
England — spent two weeks
with the Sisters fire depart-
ment, living at the station
and shadowing members
of the Sisters team to learn
the ins and outs of wildland
firefighting on the Milli Fire
burning west of Sisters. It is
David Hodge’s second year
coming to Sisters, and for the
rest of the team it is their first
time to Oregon.

Black Butte Ranch celebrates the arts
Black Butte Ranch is cel-
ebrating the arts — and sup-
porting arts in the Sisters
community — with its annual
Art at the Ranch show on
September 1 and 2.
The event kicks off Friday
evening with an artist recep-
tion and silent auction at the
BBR Lodge, starting at 5:30
p.m. The Lodge is displaying
works by several artists who
are featured in the next day’s
art fair.
One of those is wood
sculptor Jon Stark, who has
several pieces ready for the
show.
“I’ll have a whole new set
of pieces that I’ll be taking
out to the Ranch,” he told The
Nugget.
Stark’s work features local
woods — ponderosa and
lodgepole pine and juniper.
Stark is the son of nationally
recognized Sisters artist Paul
Stark, whose work is also on
display in the show. Sculpture
in wood is a family art form.
“I started cleaning up saw-
dust in Dad’s shop when I was
just a kid,” Stark recalled.
After working with his
father, he started sculpting on
his own and now makes his
living at it.
Also featured is the work
of show poster artist Jill
Neal. Famous for her images
of Wild (Tasteful) Women of
Rubenesque proportion — art
that is featured on everything
from greeting cards to wine
labels, Neal has an exten-
sive background in the fine
arts. Jill’s education includes
a bachelor of arts degree
in art from Oregon State
University as well as gradu-
ate studies in sculpture with
Frederick Lipman at Portland
State University. She exhib-
its extensively in galleries
and participates in numer-
ous art festivals throughout
the Northwest, and is repre-
sented in many private and
corporate collections. Neal
was recently the featured art-
ist for a curated show at the
Millard Sheets Gallery in Los
Angeles.
Saturday’s art fair on the
Lakeside Promenade runs
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
features a wide variety of
Northwest artists and crafts-
men displaying their work.
