BEND (AP) — Authorities
say three security guards
were arrested for wrongfully
detaining two people at an
Oregon eclipse festival.
The Bulletin reports the
three guards were arrested
Tuesday morning, August
22, at Big Summit Prairie
and later released with
their charges dropped, but
the Crook County District
Attorney’s Office is review-
ing the case.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested
Washington state residents
Jared Leoney and Ryan
Schroeder and Oregon resi-
dent Thomas King on accusa-
tions that they detained a man
and woman for cooking drugs
in a camper.
Leoney and King were
charged with assault because
the detained man required
medical attention.
King was also found with
a concealed handgun and
although he had a permit for
it, the event security require-
ments stated that firearms
were prohibited.
Crook County Sheriff’s
Sgt. Travis Jurgens says the
couple had not been making

volunteers who help Sisters
Habitat throughout the year.
These generous folks were
honored last week dur-
ing Sisters Habitat’s Board
of Director’s 9th Annual
Volunteer Appreciation
Barbecue. The volunteers
gave more than 19,000 hours
during the past year helping
sort donations at the Habitat
Thrift Store and ReStore,
building at the construction
site, and serving on numerous
committees.
Seventy people and two
groups were honored with the
President’s Volunteer Service
Award. The Habitat support-
ers were given a certificate
and a bronze, silver, or gold
lapel pin. Bronze awards
were given to individuals
who volunteered 100 to 249
hours, silver was given to
those who volunteered 250 to
499 hours and gold was given
to those serving 500 or more
hours. The two groups hon-
ored during the past year were
Heart of Oregon Corps and
the University of Minnesota
Collegiate Challenge group.

Achievement Award for vol-
unteering more than 4,000
hours during their many years
of service to Sisters Habitat.
Many of Habitat’s volun-
teers have been helping out
for years with the organization
and in 2009 a 1,000-hour club
was formed. This year four
volunteers joined Habitat’s
1,000-hour club, which is a
cumulative award given to
a volunteer once he or she
has served 1,000 hours. The
award was presented to Lynn
Jones and Ellie Hammond,
who volunteer at the construc-
tion site and on the board of
directors; Susan Mackey, who
volunteers at the Thrift Store;
and Ken Purkey, who vol-
unteers at the ReStore. With
the addition of these four,
the 1,000 club now has 100
members.
During the evening,
Habitat homeowner Darcy
Ling-Scott thanked the vol-
unteers for their service to
Habitat. She shared the story
of her struggle to pay for
housing and provide for her
three children. She worked
three to four jobs to make
ends meet. Since purchasing
her home seven years ago she
has found financial stability,
gone back to college and has
one job.
Sisters Habitat for
Humanity was founded in
1991, and has provided home-
ownership opportunities for
63 families.
Volunteer orientation ses-
sions are offered on the first
and third Wednesday of each
month. For more information
