CERsAIN AGE: Stafford

Continued from page 10
While camped near bluffs
overlooking the Platte River,
Abigail rode to the top and
reported seeing “the Platte
below me flowing on in
peaceful music… The emi-
grants wagons cattle and
horses on the road in either
direction as far as the eye
could reach, the plain below
in which all this living mass
was moving contrasted
strangely with the view on
the other side of where I
was; There nothing could be
seen but still higher ranges
of bluffs or rather sand
hills.”
In places, soft sandy
roads across the plains made
for difficult travel. The sand
could blow up in clouds hid-
ing everything from sight.
The alkali water caused
great sickness. Abigail
described columns of “sand-
stone formed in massive
bluffs shaped by the hard
winds of this region.” She
recorded passing Nebraska
Court House Rock, Chimney
Rock, and Scotts Bluff, well-
known landmarks along the
trail.
Abigail described
their delight at seeing the
“long wished for hills”
covered with timber as they
approached Fort Laramie.
“The breeze blowing from
these hills seems to inhale us
with new life and vigor.”
This eastern part of
p r e s e n t - d a y Wy o m i n g
is where we are headed,
to visit the grave of my
great-great grandmother
Ann, which is located on a
ranch near Glendo, along
the Emigrant Road. Bones
were unearthed during some
roadwork several years ago
and determined to be those
of Ann Scott and another
woman with whom she was
buried.
The Oregon California
Trails Association (OCTA)
had the bones re-interred
and placed a bronze plaque
commemorating Ann and
the thousands of emigrants
who traveled the Oregon and
California trails.
We will be visiting the
ranch and the gravesite with
members of the OCTA, as
well as Fort Laramie and
the museums in Glendo and
Douglas, and other signifi-
cant points along the trail
in Idaho and Wyoming.
Our furthest points east
will be Scotts Bluff and
Ash Hollow in western
Nebraska.
I will be keeping my own
modern-day journal and will
send stories and photos from
the trail to The Nugget.

Exhibit features photography
The landscape and night-
sky photography of 19-year-
old photographer Austin
James Jackson will hang in
the Sisters Art Works lobby
gallery through August and
most of September.
The exhibit starts August
1 with an artist reception
from 4 to 7 p.m. A second
reception will be held Friday,
August 18, from 4 to 7 p.m.
The “Sky Light” exhibit
will feature the photographic
artwork of the local pho-
tographer and adventurer.
Austin James Jackson’s pho-
tographic subjects are a cel-
ebration of mountains and
light and movement in the
universe from our own place
— our Oregon home. They
resonate with the timing of
the upcoming eclipse.
The Roundhouse Founda-
tion, in an effort to further its
support of arts and artists in
Sisters and Central Oregon, is
sponsoring this exhibit.
The exhibit is open on
weekdays at 204 W. Adams
Ave.
