Still time to register
for Hoodoo run
The Hoodoo Challenge:
Race to the Top, sponsored
by the Kiwanis Club of
Sisters is still accepting reg-
istration for this year’s event
scheduled for Saturday, July
29.
The half-marathon
(13.1 miles) run and walk,
which begins at Corbett
Sno-Park at 9:00 a.m., liter-
ally does finish at the top
of Hoodoo, which means a
1,035 foot climb for runners
and walkers willing to give
it a try.
The Challenge, in its sec-
ond year, is one of the annual
fundraisers the service club
puts on each year to help
fund its projects, which
include the food bank, schol-
arships, grants to community
organizations and other com-
munity needs that arise.
According to the Kiwanis
website, the course follows
scenic trails that include
views of Island Lake, Link
Lake and Sand Camp Lake.
After the race, runners will
put their weary legs to a final
test with a walk down the
mountain for the post-race
party at the Hoodoo Lodge
parking area.
The challenging course
offers unique bragging
rights, as not many people
can say they have run to the
top of Hoodoo. Last year’s
men’s winner, Nick Scalfone,
finished in 1:29:20, while
the women’s winner, Bryn
Singleton of Sisters, clocked
1:58:36.
Suzy Ramsey is the race
director.
“We are really encouraged
in our second year,” she said.
“We have lots of sponsors,
and we are very excited that
the course is more fully a trail
run which I think people will
have a much better time of it.
Last year’s course had quite a
lot of pavement. Our aid sta-
tions will be fully manned by
volunteers and everything is
well-prepared.”
Hope for a child.
Change for a nation.
An extra perk for entrants
is that all entrants will get a
day pass to Hoodoo for the
winter season and the overall
men’s and women’s winners
will receive season passes.
“We also want walkers to
know that we will allow them
to start before 9 a.m. so they
can get finished in time for
the after-party,” said Ramsey.
Registration, which can
be done online at Ultra
Signup or the day of the race,
appears to be outpacing last
year’s numbers, which bodes
well for the club’s charitable
projects. With two weeks to
go, 63 people have registered
according to the Ultra Signup
website. Thirty-eight hearty
souls completed the course
last year.
Other fundraisers con-
ducted by Sister Kiwanis
include the Buckaroo
Breakfast at Rodeo time, the
See’s Candy sales during the
Christmas holiday season,
and the annual Antiques and
Bling Sale during Memorial
Day weekend.

tion contact Ramsey at

Sisters woman killed in I-5 crash
Taylor Nieri, who grew
up in Sisters and graduated
from Sisters High School as
Athlete of the Year in 2013,
was killed in a rollover
accident on Interstate 5 on
Sunday, July 16.
On July 16, at about 5
p.m., Oregon State Police
and first responders were dis-
patched to a single-vehicle
rollover on Interstate 5 near
milepost 133. Preliminary
investigation revealed that a
2002 Chevy van, operated by
Nieri, age 22, of Eugene, was
southbound when one of its
tires blew out causing Nieri
to lose control.
The van went off the
roadway and onto the
shoulder where it rolled
multiple times, coming to
rest on its top after cross-
ing Rogers Road, a county
road adjacent to Interstate
5. During the crash the rear
passenger, Nieri’s hus-
band, James Thorp, 35, was
ejected.
Nieri was declared dead
at the scene by first respond-
ers. Thorpe was transported
by ground ambulance to
Mercy Medical Center
and was later taken by air
ambulance to Sacred Heart
at Riverbend with critical
injuries.
OSP is continuing the
investigation into the crash.
Nieri was wearing safety
restraints at the time of the
crash. Thorpe was not wear-
ing safety restraints.
Man cited in connection with fatal dog attack
A man was cited in con-
nection with an attack by
his dogs on another dog at
Cline Falls State Park, which
resulted in the death of a yel-
low lab.
On June 22, depu-
ties received a call form
Bobbie Pierson saying her
yellow Labrador retriever
was attacked at Cline Falls
State Park. Pierson said that
two dogs attacked her dog.
Pierson said when the owner
of the two dogs parked his
vehicle and opened the
passenger door to let the
dogs out, the dogs imme-
diately ran toward her dog
lying on the riverbank and
begin to attack her dog. The
yellow lab died the next
day.
The man left the scene.
According to the
Deschutes County Sheriff’s
Office, Seth Collins sub-
sequently contacted law
enforcement to identify
himself as the dog owner
involved in the attack on
Pierson’s dog. Law enforce-
ment officials reported that
Collins was cooperative and
met with a deputy in person
after seeing the story in the
media and hearing the extent
of the injuries to Pierson’s
dog. Collins described the
suspect dog as a mastiff/
husky mix named “Stratos.”
After the incident Collins
left the area to avoid a con-
frontation with Pierson and
did not realize the extent
of the injuries inflicted to
Pierson’s dog, according to
sheriff ’s office investiga-
tors. Collins was issued cita-
tions for Animal at Large and
Animal Nuisance.
