Katy Yoder moves on
from folk festival
“That’s my creative outlet.”
The demands of her
SFF job make it difficult to
devote the necessary time to
her writing, so, she said, “in
order to go through that door
as a writer, I needed to close
this door.”
Yoder came on board with
Sisters Folk Festival in 2007,
hired as the organization’s
events director. She wore a
lot of hats in that position,
including developing rela-
tionships with donors and
sponsors. It turned out that
Katy Yoder has had a good
ride as the development direc-
tor for Sisters Folk Festival,
Inc. (SFF). Now she’s sad-
dling up to ride out on new
adventures after more than a
decade working for SFF.
Katy will stay on as devel-
opment director through this
year’s festival in September
and until the end of 2017 to
help transition-in her even-
tual replacement.
Yoder, who is a freelance
writer for The Nugget, plans
to use the time she frees up to
focus on her writing.
“I love writing,” she said.

Opera on the big screen
at Sisters Movie House
World-class opera returns
to the big screen in Central
Oregon when Sisters Movie
House presents the Royal
Opera House production of
Giuseppe Verdi’s version
of Shakespeare’s Otello in
an exclusive screening on
Sunday, July 16, at 4 p.m. All
tickets are $15 and are on sale
now.
The opera, featur-
ing German tenor Jonas
Kaufmann, is the second
in Sisters Movie House’s
“Summer Sunday Series” of
cultural programming and is
a Central Oregon exclusive to
the locally owned cinema.
The vision of Olivier
Award-winning director
Keith Warner, the produc-
tion focuses on the opposi-
tion of light and dark, good
and evil. Exploring the
mental collapse of Otello —
urged on by Iago (French
baritone Ludovic Tézier) —
we see Otello believe that
Desdemona (Italian soprano
Maria Agresta) has betrayed
him. A psychological drama,
the characters explore themes
of trust and insecurity fuelled
by Iago’s lies — enemies
become allies and friends

SOQS board member Jeff Omodt fell in love with an exhibit of Lion King quilts.
Lion King quilt exhibit a highlight
By Jodi Schneider McNamee

The Lion King travel-
ing quilt show presented by
Cherrywood Hand Dyed
Fabric will travel the coun-
try with 120 original 20-by-
20-inch unique quilts.
Participants from all
over the world took the
Cherrywood Challenge and
designed the quilts with just
two basic colors; black and
gold. Accent colors from
Cherrywood were allowed.
There were more than
300 entries, and from the
138 finalists, 120 quilts were
selected for the traveling
exhibit.
The quilt exhibit found
its way to the 2017 Sisters
Outdoor Quilt Show when
SOQS board member Jeff
Omodt saw a short video
about the quilts online at the
beginning of the year.
“I fell in love with the
face of a lion, ‘Concrete
Jungle King,’ that Terri Bahn
from Minnesota had quilted,”
said Omodt. “So, I tracked
down the show.”
