Wednesday, June 7, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon
Quilt will help support Furry Friends Roundabout to serve as
Central Oregon gateway
“This one was hard to let
go,” Valerie Fercho-Tillery
said of the quilt she has
donated to raise funds for the
Furry Friends Foundation.
It’s easy to see why the
quilter grew particularly
attached to the whimsical
quilt featuring dogs and even
a couple kitties engaged in all
kinds of recreation. The color
and detail are exceptional.
Entitled “Pets Just Wanna
Have Fun,” this year’s origi-
nally designed quilt is truly a
work of art.
For Fercho-Tillery, it’s
more about the cause than
it is about the quilt, so it
now hangs at The Nugget
Newspaper office, where it
is up for grabs in the Furry
Friends annual quilt drawing.
I so appreciate Valerie’s
dedication to Furry
Friends. She’ll even be on
hand Quilt Show Saturday
to help sell the tickets.

When the new roundabout
at the Highway 20/Barclay/
McKinney Butte intersection
is completely finished, there
will be native landscaping,
lighting, and a singular piece
of artwork in the center.
According to Abbey
Driscoll, the Region 4 com-
munity liaison for the Oregon
Department of Transportation
(ODOT), the artwork will
denote the roundabout “as
a gateway to the city of
Sisters, the Central Oregon
region, Deschutes National
Forest, and the McKenzie
Pass-Santiam Pass National
Scenic Byway.”
She also said that the
artwork will “reference the
theme, ‘A Journey Through
the Passes is a Journey
Through a Land of Contrast,’
which is the theme of the
Scenic Byway, and describes
the unique natural environ-
ment of Sisters.”
Beginning last June, a
process was undertaken by
the Sisters Arts Association,
Sisters Ranger District, City
of Sisters, and ODOT to
acquire an appropriate piece
of artwork to serve as the
centerpiece of the round-
about. This process included
securing funding, determin-
ing the selection committee
and technical advisory com-
mittee members, writing the
call for artists (RFP), and
determining requirements for
art on a state highway.
“Each partner has been
instrumental in this process,”
said Driscoll. “ODOT and
the Sisters Ranger District
(U.S. Forest Service) co-
wrote the initial applica-
tion for funding. The City
took the lead in conven-
ing all partners, including
Sisters Arts Association, on
a monthly basis to write the
call for artists and determine
the final selection process.”
A nationwide call to art-
ists is being launched on
the CaFE for Artists web-
site (CaFE = Call for Entry).
The Sisters Arts Association
and Sisters Ranger District
will make up the art selec-
tion committee whose job
will be to narrow down the
field of submissions to eight
