Rodger, who in addi- tion to restoring classic cars — including Model As and Model Ts — enjoys hunting and fishing, told The Nugget, “We just love the area, it has everything we want to do.” Invited by Sisters Rodeo legend Glenn Miller — who was also building the Dwights’ new home in Sisters — to participate as By Craig Rullman Correspondent Sisters Rodeo board mem- ber Rodger Dwight believes in horse power. When Rodger and his wife, Sandy, built a barn on their property, the neighbors eagerly inquired if they would fill it with horses, but Rodger had other ideas. It is now home to his restored classic Corvettes. The goal of the grant program was to maximize the survivability rate from incidents of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). One of the best ways to do that is to have as many AEDs as pos- sible deployed throughout our fire district. The grant recipients are: Three Creeks Brewing Company, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Metabolic Maintenance Products, Green Ridge Physical Therapy, Sisters Bunkhouse and Suttle Lodge and Boathouse. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is an abrupt loss of heart func- tion. It is a leading cause of death in the U.S. An AED is a lightweight, portable device which can deliver an electric shock through the chest to the heart, which in many cases will restore nor- mal heart function. Once the AED is installed See AED on page 18 Jeffrey Schuler, Jr. (11) and Triston White (12) have reaped many honors in club wrestling. Wrestlers bringing home the iron By Jim Cornelius News Editor Sisters athletes Jeffrey Schuler and Triston White may be new to wrestling, but they haven’t lost any time making their presence felt on the mats. The Deschutes Mat Club wrestlers have reaped a har- vest of iron on their way to qualifying for regional cham- pionships in Pocatello, Idaho, later this month. White, age 12, has had a particularly impressive run, taking Triple Crown honors with first-place finishes in Folk Style, Free Style, and Roman-Greco wrestling. He attributes his success to his exceptional strength, but he’s also quickly learning technique. Schuler, age 11, qualified for regionals with fifth-place finishes in free-style and Roman-Greco. He, too, is new to the sport. His dad, also Jeffrey, sug- gested that they give the sport a try. Jeffrey Senior does not have a wrestling background himself. “I was a gymnast,” he said. “But I’m so bought into it now.” Schuler has seen his son and Triston change over the past year. Young Jeffrey lost weight and gained con- fidence, and both youths have grown physically, men- tally, and emotionally more resilient. The elder Schuler notes that the kids have had to learn to eat right and stay hydrated. “Wrestlers know that sugar is not their friend,” he said. The mental and emotional resilience comes through being tempered in the fires of a tough and highly personal sport. Jeffrey recalled crying when he won a match in Reno. “I didn’t know I was going to win that match, because that guy was really hard,” he said. Losing is tough. “You pretty much wres- tle your heart out and you find out you lose — you’re See WRESTLERS on page 29 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
