background includes owning
his own advertising agency,
and later taking his talents
for advertising and mar-
keting to Beaverton-based
Electro Scientific Industries.
For the last 15 years of his
career Rodger’s territory was
China. He estimates that he
has made almost 40 trips to
China in that time, spend-
ing several weeks each time.
With the assistance of inter-
preters, Rodger marketed
high-tech equipment for
Chinese factories and made
numerous friends.
“There are some super
people in China,” he said.
His business experience
has been a boon for the rodeo
as well. In addition to work-
ing with Glenn Miller and
Bonnie Malone on orga-
nizing the parade, and the

Dwight completed a
Sponsor’s Guide, which is
instrumental in assisting
potential rodeo sponsors in
understanding the advertising
rates and exposure. Because
there is high demand for
sponsor slots at the rodeo,
where thousands of fans can
be expected on any night, the
guide is essential.
As a board member,
Rodger has had the oppor-
tunity to meet with other
PRCA rodeo representatives
from around the country to
discuss “what works and
what doesn’t.” Sisters Rodeo
is an enormous success, and
one reason for that, Dwight
told The Nugget, is because
“we own our own ground.”
Ownership of the rodeo
grounds eliminates much of
the potential red tape and
layers of bureaucracy faced
by other rodeos.
But it isn’t all a sunshine
daydream, Dwight says.
“It takes a lot of working
Saturdays” to get the grounds
ready for one of Sisters’ most
anticipated events.
Rodger loves his work
with the other board mem-
bers and rodeo volunteers.
“It has been great to get
involved and we’ve made
some really good friends,”
he said.
Prior to his work with
Sisters Rodeo, Dwight was
a fan of rodeo, and was
involved with the Pendleton
Round-Up for almost 30
years. With family friends
Terry and Debbie Anderson,
owners of Anderson Land
and Livestock in Pilot
Rock, Rodger and Sandy
have enjoyed years of rid-
ing good horses on great
country.
Considering all of the
thrills, spills, and chills of
Sisters Rodeo, The Nugget
asked Rodger if he had a
favorite event.
“I love the bucking
events,” he said, “but I really

admitted to starting the
fire behind the shack with
gasoline and a lighter. It
was apparent there was no
intent to harm people dur-
ing this incident, the sher-
iff’s office reported. During
the investigation, one youth
was found to be in posses-
sion of a small amount of
alcohol and was issued a
separate citation for that
violation.
All juveniles were
arrested and cited to appear in
juvenile court, then released
to the custody of their par-
ents. The sheriff ’s office
notes there is no current
danger to the public stem-
ming from this incident and
this appears to be an isolated
occurrence.
