ARTWORK: Artists
are being sought
for roundabout
Continued from page 4
semifinalists and then three
finalists.
The qualifications submis-
sions from the artists are due
June 30, and the semi-final-
ists will be notified by July
31. The eight semi-finalists
will have until November 15
to submit their proposal and
concept drawings of their art-
work and the three finalists
will be notified by the end of
November.
Finalists will be asked to
prepare a scale model of their
proposed designs and will
make presentations to the Art
Selection Committee in early
February 2018. Models will
be put on display for public
input. Final selection of the
chosen artwork will be made
February 22. The artist will
be required to have fabrica-
tion of the project completed
by August 31 with installa-
tion complete September 30,
2018.
The artwork will be
judged on the following:
professional qualifications
of the artist(s); proven abil-
ity to undertake the project;
attractiveness and potential
of artwork to enhance the
roundabout; artistic merit
and superior craftsmanship;
uniqueness and presentation
of artwork; the degree to
which the artist’s work fits
within the context of Sisters
and Central Oregon culture,
scenic/landscape, and natural
elements.
“Because artwork is very
much a personal interpreta-
tion, we are excited to see
how artists incorporate this
information into a proposed
artwork and are confident
that this process will generate
a piece of art that enhances
the community and serves
as a gateway to the region,”
Driscoll said.
“It is extremely impor-
tant to the Art Selection
Committee, City of Sisters,
and ODOT that the public
be given a chance to view
artwork proposals and weigh
in on the final selection…
Models (of the three final-
ists’ proposals) will be put
on display for a two-week
time period at the library
during which time the pub-
lic may review and provide
input on the models. Public
input will be summarized and
will provide guidance to the
Art Selection Committee on
their recommendation to City
Council.”
U.S. Forest Service Scenic
Byways Program Leader and
landscape architect Robin
Gyorgyfalvy added, “On
behalf of the Sisters Ranger
District, connecting with the
community on this project
is key, especially because
the Scenic Byways Program
is grassroots in nature. It is
important for Sisters to play
an integral part in having its
roundabout artwork tell the
story of its unique commu-
nity and surroundings and the
economic vitality gained by
supporting projects on public
lands that bring federal dol-
lars to rural Oregon.”
Sisters City Council
will make the final selec-
tion of the artist through a
majority vote. The City of
Sisters and ODOT will serve
as a Technical Advisory
Committee to review propos-
als to ensure that the design is
structurally sound and meets
safety-operational require-
ments for a state highway.

Deggendorfer (through The

“I was very honored to
be asked to serve on the
roundabout Art Selection
Committee,” she said.
“Working with the Sisters
Arts Association with their
hands-on and practical expe-
rience as sculptors and artists
has been very vital and criti-
cal throughout the entire pro-
cess,” stressed Gyorgyfalvy.
“The City of Sisters has done
an excellent job bringing
all the partners together on
a monthly basis and keep-
ing the process running
smoothly.”
“This truly speaks to
Sisters being an arts-centric
community that is full of
visionary leaders,” Driscoll
summed up.
Gyorgyfalvy concluded,
“The artwork and inte-
grated landscape archi-
tectural design within the
roundabout will result in
an incredible way to wel-
come byway travelers
through a visually welcom-
ing gateway to public lands
and the community gem of
Sisters.”

As part of the grant-
writing team for the Federal
Lands Access Program
(FLAP) grant to fund the
artwork that would be inte-
grated with the final land-
scape architectural design,
Gyorgyfalvy’s degree in art
(sculpture) and her master’s
in landscape architecture
made her a valuable mem-
ber of the team. She has been
involved in other selection
processes for roundabout art
in Bend.
The FLAP award is for
approximately $900,000.
$500,000 was given to the
City for landscaping and
commission of the interpre-
tive artwork. The remaining
funds will be used for exist-
ing construction costs such
as lighting and ODOT staff
costs.
When a member of the
Art Selection Committee
resigned, Gyorgyfalvy was
named to fill the position.

“From ODOT’s per-
spective, this has required
vision and a lot of research
as there was little direction
on requirements for art on a
public highway. This process
has given ODOT a template
to work from that will not
only benefit the community
and visitors to Sisters for
this project, but other cities
and regions in the future,”
explained Driscoll.
“We are extremely grate-
ful for all the support we
received from Art in Public
Places (in Bend) as well as
the landscape architect from
the New Mexico DOT,” said
Nicole Abbenhuis, public
works operations coordina-
tor for Sisters. New Mexico
has incorporated artwork
on many highway bridge
projects.
