18 Wednesday, May 31, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Sisters to celebrate home brew PHOTO PROVIDED Sisters firefighters will fit local children with bicycle helmets for free while supplies last. Fire district offers bicycle helmets The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District received a $200 grant from the Sisters Kiwanis Community Service Foundation to pro- vide bicycle helmets to Sisters-area children who are in need of one. With the grant funding, the fire district was able to purchase 28 bicycle helmets sized toddler through extra-large. Safe Kids Oregon reports that every two minutes, a child is treated in an emer- gency room for an uninten- tional cycle-related incident. Helmet use is the most effec- tive way to reduce bicycle- related fatalities. In Oregon all children under the age of 16 must wear a helmet. Using a helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury in chil- dren by 78 percent. Fire Chief Roger Johnson said, “This is a great partner- ship with Kiwanis, whose mission is serving the chil- dren of the world, and the fire district where we are focused on preventing injuries in our community.” For more information, or to have your child fitted for a free helmet, contact the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District at 541-549-0771 or stop by 301 S. Elm St. in Sisters. Helmets will be pro- vided at no charge while sup- plies last. Boutique beer brewing has come home — literally. Many people are crafting their own, and Sisters will celebrate the results in the Sisters Homebrew Festival at Creekside Park on Saturday, June 3, from 1 to 6 p.m. The Sisters Homebrew Festival is like many brew fests, with one distinct twist: It’s all homebrew. Organized as a fundraiser for the Sisters Park & Recreation District and the Kiwanis Club of Sisters, the event is sponsored by local businesses. The event will feature live music by bands including Dry Canyon Stampede, and smoked meats served by Sisters Meat and Smokehouse. And, of course, there will be homebrew. The event tent will house more than 30 taps of the best homebrew in the region. Amateur brewmasters from far and wide will be proudly providing kegs of their great- est creations for attendees to sample. Entry to the Sisters Homebrew Festival will be $25 at the door, or $20 if purchased in advance from either the Sisters Park & Recreation District office or the Kiwanis Club of Sisters. Once inside you are welcome to as many free samples of homebrew as you like and as much great smoked bratwurst as you can eat, for as long as supplies last. (Alcohol must be consumed responsibly, patrons will but cut off at the servers’ discretion.) There is a strict limit on the number of attendees for this event; purchase tick- ets in advance to guarantee admittance. “I think this is going to be a great community event for Sisters,” said SPRD Executive Director Liam Hughes. “We live in an area with a ton of homebrews and no event like this currently exists. Most homebrew fes- tival include the brewer just submitting a small sample of beer to a panel of judges. This event is all about home- brewers being able to share their craft with the masses, exchange ideas and just generally enjoy this great hobby.” Wandering across town...
