Trail riding and birding
on tap at bookstore
Local author Kim McCar-
rel will present and sign her
newest book, “Riding the
Metolius-Windigo Trail:
Through-Riding Central Ore-
gon’s Iconic 150-Mile Horse
Trail,” on Friday, June 2 at
6:30 p.m. at Paulina Springs
Books in Sisters.
With over 20 years expe-
rience trail riding in Oregon
and Washington and writ-
ing guide books since 2002,
Kim is well respected in the
trail-riding community. She
is going to share stories and
slides of the Metolius-Wind-
igo Trail, which extends from
the Metolius Basin 150 miles
to Windigo Pass. Kim will
also demonstrate ultralight
packing and trailer trekking to
prepare you for your next trail
ride. You’ll enjoy her great
stories and slides even if you
don’t ride!
On Saturday, June 17 at
6:30 p.m., Jenny Forrester will
read from her memoir, “Nar-
row River, Wide Sky.” Jenny
will share about growing
up on the Colorado Plateau
between slot canyons and rat-
tlesnakes with her mother and
brother in a single-wide trailer.
Jenny’s powerfully eloquent
story reveals a rural small
town comprising God-fearing
Republicans, ranchers, Mor-
mons, and Native Americans.
After their mother’s accidental
death Jenny and her brother
are left with an increasingly
strained relationship. Her
story explores the moments
and forces that hold people
together and shape their lives
as Jenny shares her search for
self while struggling with feel-
ings of isolation.
On Friday, June 23, at 6:30
p.m., two birding enthusiasts,
John Shewey and Tim Blount,
will share their book “Birds of
the Pacific Northwest.” The
authors will entertain with a
slide presentation. The book
describes and illustrates more
than 400 bird species com-
monly encountered in Oregon,
Washington, Idaho and British
Columbia.
On Friday, June 30 at 6:30
p.m., Bryan Denson will pres-
ent his book, “The Spy’s Son:
The True Story of the Highest-
Ranking CIA Officer Ever
Convicted of Espionage and
the Son He Trained to Spy for
Russia.” A true-life spy story
from an award-winning inves-
tigative reporter and veteran
staff writer for The Oregonian.
Denson will take the audience
deep inside the world of spies
and spy catchers, a dysfunc-
tional CIA family, and the
secret cat-and-mouse games
still playing out between the
United States and Russia. This
should be an interesting eve-
ning while Bryan shares one
of the strangest spy stories in
American history.

Davis wins bike in veterans raffle
Three Sisters residents are
celebrating their success in
the 4th annual Sisters Band
of Brothers electric bicycle
raffle. In the drawing held
May 10, the winning ticket
was held by Kathleen Davis.
Don Fullhart won the prize
for second place, a $100 gift
card to Takoda’s Restaurant.
Third place went to Beverly
Halcon who received a $100
gift card to Ray’s Food Place.
The bicycle, provided by
Blazin Saddles Bicycle Shop,
is valued at $2,900.
The Sisters Band of
Brothers uses funds raised
in the raffle for the ben-
efit of area veterans needing
assistance with issues like
mobility, home safety, health
and short-term economic
shortfalls.
Band of Brothers
President Tom Barrier said,
“We are fortunate to have
chapter members willing to
get involved in this event
each year for the benefit of
their brothers in arms.”
He also expressed thanks
to everyone who purchased
raffle tickets or made direct
donations, along with local
