Sisters players had a good showing, and three players will advance to play at the state tournament. Jed Kizziar and Jacob Gurney (No. 4 seed) were Sisters’ No. 1 doubles team and posted a win in their first match on Wednesday. The combo played well together against a strong Philomath team and walked off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. “Both boys hit great return serves cross-court, allowing the other to pick off the ensuing shot,” said Coach Bim Gander. In the quarterfinals, Kizziar and Gurney defeated Leriche and Sullivan from Madras. The duo lost the first set 4-6, but had a ter- rific comeback in the second set for a 6-2 win. They went on to win the third set 6-4, which qualified them for the state tournament. On Thursday, Jed and Jacob matched up against Suelzle and Hulburt, the No. 1 seed in the tourney. The Cascade combo easily beat the Outlaws 6-1, 6-0. “They (Suelzle and Hulburt) were clearly the best team in the draw by far,” said Gander. Gurney tallied the win in two sets, with scores of 6-4, 6-2. “This was a good testa- ment to how much Jonny has improved over the season, because he lost in the head- to-head earlier in the season.
