Sisters gathers for
day of prayer
A capacity crowd filled
the hall at Sisters Community
Church on Thursday morn-
ing, May 4, as members of the
Sisters community gathered to
pray for community and coun-
try as part of the National Day
of Prayer. The event provided
breakfast and coffee, followed
by the Pledge of Allegiance
and music from a worship
team that included students
of the non-denominational
Sisters Christian Academy,
which provided financial sup-
port for the event.
The Sisters gathering
is in its fifth year. Similar
gatherings are traditionally
held in some 35,000 venues
across the nation on the first
Thursday of May.
Jeremy Storton opened the
morning’s proceedings, and
introduced keynote speaker
Brett Miller. Miller was seri-
ously wounded in Iraq and
founded the Sisters-based non-
profit Warfighter Outfitters to
help other wounded veterans
through getting them out on
the water and into the woods
for hunting and fishing activi-
ties together.
Miller, the son of a pas-
tor, told The Nugget that he
participated in mission work
in Mexico as a youth and
believes that everyone should
partake of such work: “It
gives you a different perspec-
tive on things.”
Miller, who described his
faith as “a relationship, not
a religion,” told his story to
the Sisters gathering. His talk
ended with a long, standing
ovation from the audience.
Oregon
man
arrested
on animal
abuse
charges
BEND (AP) — Deputies
arrested a man following an
investigation into the care of
animals at a Central Oregon
farm.
Court records show
40-year-old Joshua Larkly
of Culver faces numer-
o u s co u n t s o f an i m al
neglect.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s
deputy Steve Keever tells
The Bulletin the investigation
began last month when four
pigs got loose. Deputies went
to the farm to see if they lived
there.
He says they discovered
110 farm animals living in
deplorable conditions, and
more than a dozen animals
were dead.
Keever says the chick-
ens, cows, ducks, goats, pigs
and sheep were confined to
two pens. A vet called to the
scene said the animals lacked
water and proper food.
Keever says the sus-
pect was taking care of
the animals for a brother
who’s away working as a
trucker.
Accidental discovery
inspires Crayola’s new blue
EASTON, Pa. (AP) —
Crayola’s new crayon color
will be based on a blue pig-
ment discovered in 2009.
Scientists at Oregon State
University accidentally dis-
covered the brilliant blue hue
when they were experiment-
ing with materials that could
be used in electronics.
Crayola said Friday that
it’s partnering on the new
crayon with Oregon State
and The Shepherd Color
Company, which licenses the
pigment known as YInMn
(yihn-mihn) blue.
The crayon maker recently
retired the color dandelion.
Crayola is leaving it to fans to
come up with a name for the
replacement crayon, which
will make its debut this year

Crayola is based in Easton,
Pennsylvania, and is a subsid-
iary of Hallmark Cards Inc.
