Boyd Wickman
Doris M. Bendd

Boyd Wickman, 86, of
Bend, passed away April 25.
He was born in Martinez,
California on June 17, 1930,
to Emil Ellis Wickman and
Fern Belinda Hoy. He was
preceded in death by his
daughter, Julie Wickman-
Leones. He is survived
by his daughter Laura F.
Wickman-Carle; brother
Robert Wickman, grandchil-
dren Kai, Wyatt and Garrett
Christianson, Ian and Emily
Leones; and the love of his
life, Mimi Graves.
Boyd graduated from the
University of California at
Berkeley with a Master of
Science in entomology, and
after serving in the U.S.
Army during the Korean
conflict joined the Forest
Service. His career as a
research entomologist for
the U.S. Forest Service and
later as a consulting forester
spanned a 60-year period.
He was a respected scien-
tist with over 100 published
articles on forest insects
and a book on the history
of Western forest entomol-
ogy. He was one of the
earliest certified entomolo-
gists in the Entomological
Society of America and the
first and longest-serving
Emeritus Scientist with the
Pacific Northwest Research
Station, USDA Forest
Service in Bend. He was
in great demand around
the world as a lecturer and
served as an adjunct pro-
fessor at Oregon State
University.
Boyd was a man of integ-
rity, intellect and heart. He
was an adventurer, expert
horseman and lover of
good wine and barbecue.
He shared his wisdom with
grandchildren and students:
“I have become enthralled
with history. This seems
to be an affliction that
advances with age. But his-
tory is more than recounting
the past; it is also how we
all will be judged by future
generations. So it behooves
us to get things right to the
best of our abilities.”
Doris (Smith) Bendt was
born in Cassville, NY on
March 25, 1924. She was
10th born of 11 children and
grew up living on a farm and
attending school in a one-
room school house. She felt
so blessed all of her life for
her beautiful upbringing in a
rural setting with support and
love from a large family. In
March of 1945 she met the
love of her life, Harry Bendt.
They were married in June
of the same year, moved to
Chicago where Harry was
discharged from the U.S.
Army and started engineering
school. In 1951 they moved to
the Seattle area when Harry
was hired by Boeing.
While Harry spent his
career with Boeing, Doris
kept very busy raising their 6
children. She was an amazing
mother and she dedicated her
life to being just that. After
Harry retired they moved to

Both organizations shared
his love of the land and
music.
Sisters in 1996. They lived
in a very rural setting enjoy-
ing the peace and tranquil-
ity of the forest. They had
done a fair amount of travel
in their years, but especially
after retirement, they traveled
extensively across this great
country in their motorhome
which they loved so very
much. After Harry’s death in
1999, Doris made the move to
Redmond where she became
very involved in her neigh-
borhood and especially active
in the senior activities nearby.
She played cards several
times a week and spent her
days being a wonderful friend
and neighbor. She loved being
a part of City Center Church
of Redmond.
Doris lived an amazing
life to 92 years, 7 months
and 9 days. She was a beau-
tiful soul on every level. She
had a faith that was an anchor
throughout all of her years.
She was an inspiration to all
whose lives she touched. She
is survived by her 6 children
who cherished her: Suzanne,
Wayne, Gene, Louise, Walt
and Paul; 11 grandchildren;
and many great-grandchil-
dren. She has two living sib-
lings, Vivian and Myrtle; and
her youngest brother Eddie
passed away 3 months after
Doris’ death at the age of 90.
Doris left her life on this
earth peacefully at home and
surrounded by love. Her hand
was being held by her daugh-
ter as the chaplain and the
angels transitioned her home.

Contractors continue construction of the
roundabout at the intersection of US 20
and Barclay Drive/McKinney Butte Road.
In order to complete the
McKinney Butte side of the
roundabout, McKinney Butte
Road will be closed through
Memorial Day, beginning
the end of April.
The majority of work will occur Monday
through Saturday during daytime hours.
Traffi c on US 20 will remain open, and
work will not provide signifi cant delays for
traffi c except for the detour of McKinney
Butte Road. Travelers trying to access
McKinney Butte should follow signed
detour routes using Hood Avenue.
Additional information about closures and
detours will be posted when applicable.
