for fiscal year July 1, 2017 to
June 30, 2018, will be held at
City Council Chambers, City
Hall, 520 E. Cascade Avenue,

meeting will take place on

thinking, “Here we go again.”
Thankfully, we didn’t.
The federal trial found that
two of the officers had vio-
lated King’s civil rights.
Some people were more-or-
less satisfied; some people
still thought the officers got
off too easy; some people
thought the second trial
smelled of double jeop-
ardy and a railroad job.
Mostly, people were simply
exhausted and relieved that
the horrible multi-year ordeal
was over. Rodney King went
on with his ill-starred life
until he was found OD’d and
dead in his swimming pool at
the age of 47 in 2012.
Marilyn and I decided
there was no way in the world
we were going to stay in the
L.A. area to raise a family.
It wasn’t so much the riots

themselves, which had only
tangentially impacted us; it
was what they represented
to us: An apocalyptic urban
dystopia that could only be
coped with by fleeing it.
In October 1993, we
headed north to Central
Oregon. As we hit Ventura
and turned north on the 101,
I played Guy Clark’s L.A.
Freeway on the tape deck in
my little white truck:
If I can just get off of this
L.A. Freeway
Without getting killed or
caught
I’ll be down the road in a
cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain’t
bought…
So Ceili, who turns 18 on
May 2, was born and raised
in Central Oregon because
her parents decided to step
outside the blast radius of
one of the worst race riots in
American history. Twenty-
five years on, much has
changed for the better — yet
we remain a deeply divided,
often angry nation, awaiting
the next explosion.
