Reading night promotes literacy

Jake Merrell recently
completed Officer Candidate
School in the United States
Marine Corps in Quantico,
Virginia. He is a 12-year
veteran of the USMC. His
parents are Carla and Bruce
Merrell of Sisters.
Jake graduated in 2004
from Sisters High School.
Jake will next finish his
four-year degree at Oregon
State University as part of
this program.
Chamber receives grant
for wayfinding kiosk
The Sisters Area Chamber
of Commerce has received a
grant from Travel Oregon for
a wayfinding kiosk in down-
town Sisters.
“Receiving this grant, and
building the visitor kiosk and
signage, are big steps in con-
tinuing our successful efforts
to enhance the visitor expe-
rience in Sisters Country,”
said Judy Trego, executive
director of the Sisters Area
Chamber of Commerce.
The kiosk program will
assist visitors and residents
in locating downtown retail
businesses, dining, lodging,
parks, trailheads, services and
the Sisters Business Park.
Current Chamber mem-
bers will receive a listing as
an added benefit to their cur-
rent membership.
Businesses that are not
chamber members may have
an opportunity to be included
in the kiosk program for an
annual fee. The fee will cover
bi-annual updates and annual
maintenance of the kiosk and
map.

Community (SPTC) is look-
ing forward to setting sail
with “Books Ahoy! Family
Reading and Literacy Night”
on Friday, April 21 from 5 to
7 p.m. at the school.
Sisters Elementary School
students and their families can
expect to participate in over
15 different projects designed
to inspire a love of reading
and books. Projects will be
based on the Harry Potter
series; “Percy Jackson and the
Olympians”; “Puff the Magic
Dragon”; “Do Unto Otters”;
“The BFG”; “Wonder” and
several other books.
Participants will also get a
chance to read recipes, prac-
tice tongue-twisters and speed
reading, write poetry, create
their own journals and more.
The Battle of the Books
will be represented with the
grades 3-5 titles for the 2017-
2018 school year for students
who are interested in getting a
head start in their preparation
for next year.
The Deschutes Public
Library will also have a spe-
cial poetry station.
“This should be a great
night,” said SPTC volunteer
Erin Borla. “So many fun
activities to celebrate reading
and inspire students to find
their next favorite book.”
Limited food will be avail-
able for sale but families are
encouraged to bring a picnic
dinner. There will also be a
raffle at the event for items
donated by the Deschutes
Public Library, a gift card to
Paulina Springs Books, and
a Kindle Fire. Tickets will be
available at the event for $1
each or 6 for $5; winner need
not be present.
