Outlaws tennis has tough week
By Rongi Yost
Correspondent
The boys tennis team
came off spring break a little
flat and it showed, as Sisters
lost to the White Buffalos
twice this past week.
Sisters hosted Madras
on Wednesday, April 5,
and the doubles duo of Jed
Kizziar and Jacob Gurney
were the only players that
even had a chance to post
a win.
Coach Bim Gander said,
“The boys scored an early
service break against the
experienced Dominguez/
Salgado duo. They gave the
break back, but then they
were able to prevail in a close
tiebreaker to win the first set.
The Madras team stepped
up their game considerably
as the match played on, and
our guys just weren’t able to
keep pace.”
The young Outlaws’ expe-
rience deficit showed during
every match at the three and
four positions. All of Sisters’
opponents have been able
to bring both JV and varsity
teams, and when the younger
Outlaws compete the sec-
ond time against players at
the JV level, they do much
better.
On Saturday, Sisters com-
peted at the Madras Invite in
the traditional round-robin
format for the top two singles
players and doubles teams.

Sisters, Madras, Cascade and
Estacada were District No.
2 representatives this year,
along with Klamath Union
and Henley from District No.
3, and Vale.
Although the Outlaws
didn’t post a win, Jacob
Gurney played well for
Sisters. Gurney finished in
second place overall among
the No. 1 singles players, and
finished only three games
behind Hayden Lam of
Klamath Union.
“Jonny’s serve was the
best it’s been so far this year;
more consistent and more
punishing,” said Gander.
“He’s also constructing his
points with more authority,
probing with deeper ground
strokes and finding more
opportunities at the net.”
At No. 1 doubles, Kizziar
and Jacob Gurney’s results
were better than they
appeared. They were just
unlucky on several critical
deuce points during the three
matches they played. Gander
told The Nugget that Kizziar
played better late in the day,
and showed more patience
and consistency than Gander
has seen all year.

“The tournament gave us
a good opportunity to scout
two district opponents that
we will see in the coming
weeks,” said Gander.
Sisters was to travel to
Molalla on Tuesday, April
11. On Thursday, April 13,
the Outlaws will play at
home against North Marion.
SHS winds performs
at district festival
The SHS Wind Ensemble
performed at the District
Band Festival for the first
time since 2014 and came in
second in its category. The
event was held last month at
Ridgeview High School in
Redmond.
Director of Bands Tyler
Cranor said, “It’s pretty excit-
ing considering it’s our first
year back. Our band is also
very young and still small,
being comprised of only three
seniors out of 12 students, and
nine incoming freshman.”
