Firefighters fuddraise
for leukemia, lymphoma
The Sisters Country
Firefighters Team made up
of 10 firefighters from Black
Butte Ranch, Cloverdale and
Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire
districts participated in the
26th Annual Scott Firefighter
Stairclimb in Seattle last
weekend.
Firefighters must climb 69
floors — or 1,356 steps — in
full firefighter gear including:
boots, turnouts (fire-resistive
clothing), helmet and SCBA
( s e lf - contained bre ath -
ing apparatus – weighing
approximately 50 pounds).
The event takes place in the
Columbia Tower in Seattle
and drew 1,795 participants
this year. The top time for
all participants was 10 min-
utes 58 seconds. Sisters-
Camp Sherman Fire District
Firefighter Dave Keller
finished in 15 minutes and
placed 57th overall.
Each team participat-
ing held fundraisers prior to
the event, and 100 percent
of the money donated goes
directly to the Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society for
blood cancer research. The

Rodeo poster a
collaborative effort
The 2017 Sisters Rodeo
poster was an inventive col-
laboration by three cele-
brated Sisters artists: classic
Western painter Dirk Godby;
international photographer
Gary Albertson; and life-
long graphic designer Dennis
Schmidling.
The concept was devel-
oped by Schmidling to main-
tain the rodeo’s tradition
of presenting the landmark
Three Sisters Mountains as
a backdrop to a rodeo action
scene. The finished work
draws on the strongest quali-
ties from the artistry of Godby
and Albertson.
“I believe the natural
beauty of Sisters Country
is what makes it the perfect
stage for our world-class
rodeo. Blending the fine art-
istry of Dyrk and Gary helps
to enlarge this portrait beyond
the rodeo arena and into the
viewer’s heart,” explained
Schmidling.
Godby, who is one of the
best Western artists in the
nation, offered a tie-down
roping cowboy dismounting
quickly from a colorful paint
horse. As a former rodeo
competitor, Godby is able to

Sandy McDonald is shelving her library career after three-and-a-half decades.
McDodald retiridg from Sisters Library
By Sue Stafford
Correspondent
The Sisters Library will
say goodbye to a long-time
treasure on March 31, when
Public Service Specialist
Sandy McDonald retires,
after 35 years as an employee
of the library.
The public is invited to
stop by the library on Friday,
March 31, 2 to 4 p.m., for
an open house celebrating
McDonald’s long service and
her retirement. She is leav-
ing as the longest-serving
employee in the entire
Deschutes County Library
System.
McDonald began her
work at the little Maida
Bailey building, filling in
when librarian Peg Bermel
needed help. In those days,
the library was part of the
County, before the library
district was established. The
library had its own local
board, and funding was
touch-and-go at times.
McDonald fondly recalled
examples of the community
support for the library in its
early days. During the Great
American Read, community
leaders, including the police
and fire chiefs, would come
to the school and read to the
children. Bucks for Books
helped fill the library shelves
with books.
When the then-new library
building was built (the cur-
rent Chamber of Commerce
office), students formed a
“book brigade” from the
Maida Bailey building to the
new building, passing the
