Sisters Bakery chadges hadds
Black Butte School
wraps up ski seasod

After 22 years of provid-
ing Sisters with delectable
baked goods, Melissa Ward is
turning over Sisters Bakery to
new owners. Handing off the
baton for an iconic business
is not something to be taken
lightly.
“The right people came
through the door,” Ward said.
Jeff, Stephanie, Andrew
and Michaela Bourgerie, late
of Wisconsin and Indiana, are
those “right people,” and they
took the baton and ran with it
starting last week, after work-
ing with Ward on a transition.
Melissa sat in her bakery
last Friday thumbing through
photo albums with artist Paul
Bennett, reminiscing about
two decades in business in
Sisters. The album revealed
photographs of a remodel of
the historic building — and
most of all, it told a story of
families growing up around
the business.

Black Butte School has
just wrapped up another
successful season on the
slopes. Black Butte School
students in kindergarten
through eighth grade get to
participate in the traditional
— and unique — school ski
program.
The ski program takes
place each Friday at Hoodoo
Ski area where students work
with instructors over the
course of 10 weeks to learn
mountain safety, skiing eti-
quette, self management, ski
skills and techniques, and
perseverance.
The ski program works
into the wider Black
Butte School philoso-
phy of learning through
the outdoors and using
local resources to enhance
education.
The students had an
excellent season with a lot of
opportunity for fresh powder.
Longtime Hoodoo
instructors Gary Miller
and Donna Sanders were
two of the teachers lead-
ing Black Butte School
students over the course
of their time together this
season.
Donna worked hard to
impart skiing safety with
her students and did quiz-
zes with the students. Gary
led the advanced group and
challenged them to con-
tinue to go beyond their
comfort level to try new
terrain.
Black Butte School stu-
dents will show off their new
skills on Family Ski Day on
March 24.
