Moisture collection, which has created freez- ing and expansion problems in the concrete around the building, has prevented the outside doors from opening. Several remedies will elimi- nate this problem and will be undertaken when the weather improves. Installing gutters on the building could redirect water away from the building, reducing the amount of mois- ture in the ground. Replacing the current concrete with heated sidewalks will elimi- nate the ice buildup and the need for shoveling. • Recruitment materials are out for the city manager position in Sisters. Jensen Strategies of Portland, who are conducting the recruit- ment process, will review applications beginning March 24, and conduct preliminary phone interviews with quali- fied candidates the week of April 3. It’s a fun- damental scientific disci- pline that is also the basis for space and time and helps us to understand how the universe works. If you’ve ever mar- veled at stars in the night sky, admired the functional beauty of a great bridge, or watched a helium-filled balloon rise, then you’ve experienced the extraordinary phenomenon called physics. This year the Sisters Science Fair, set for noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at Sisters High School, is featur- ing “The World of Physics.” The very loud and always exciting Ping-Pong Cannon is returning this year, shoot- ing ping-pong balls through a tube at amazing speeds. This demo will be in the long hall- way just outside of the phys- ics room. Inside the physics room you’ll find The World of See SCIENCE on page 28 PHOTO BY CEILI CORNELIUS Laura Curtis and Slater Smith are giving back to the program that helped launch their music careers. Americana alumni return to teach By Ceili Cornelius Correspondent The Americana Song Academy for Youth is a week- end where students learn from professional musicians and instructors about anything and everything to do with song- writing. The annual event, produced by Sisters Folk Festival with sponsorship sup- port from Cris Converse and The Roundhouse Foundation, was held at The Belfry in Sisters last weekend. Laura Curtis and Slater Smith both were a part of the early days of the Americana Project at Sisters High School. Curtis has recorded her own record and lived in Nashville, and is now liv- ing in Portland and working in the field of politics. Smith is a part of the well-known band The Weather Machine. They both studied politics at Willamette University, under the same advisor. They’ve been able to use their studies in their music. They are both returning instructors this year, and they love coming back every year to give back to the students. “It’s cool to see how the camp changes every year, and to see students progress over the years,” said Smith. Smith and Curtis taught similar classes, both focusing on writing songs for causes. Smith’s class focused on cre- ating characters and then find- ing what within that character you relate to; he had students write out any character or thought and then tease out what resonated most with them. Curtis’ class was more about the introspective aspect of songwriting and how to take things around you and put them into songs. This is Curtis’ seventh year coming back to song camp. “I love giving the support to the students that I got so much of us as a student in this community,” Curtis said. For her as an artist, she appreciates coming back and relating to other artists and exploring creativity in all its forms. As a young per- son, Curtis felt everything very deeply, and was always around adults and learning from them.
