Firefighters raise funds
to fight blood cancer
Firefighters from through-
out the Northwest, including
right here in Sisters Country,
are raising funds to support
the Leukemia Lymphoma
Society (LLS) and their fight
against blood cancers.
On March 12, firefight-
ers from Black Butte Ranch,
Cloverdale, and Sisters-
Camp Sherman fire districts
will travel to Seattle to com-
pete in the 26th annual Scott
Firefighter Stairclimb. In a
friendly competition with a
field of 2,000, our firefighters
will race up 69 floors of the
Columbia Center skyscraper
in a timed competition, while
wearing approximately 50
pounds of protective clothing
and equipment.
An annual event, it is
staged to raise awareness
and funding for the fight
against blood cancers such
as leukemia and lymphoma.
Firefighters from around the
world compete in this event,
whose requirement for entry
is raising funds for LLS.
On Sunday February 26,
from 3 to 8 p.m. local fire-
fighters will be at Sisters

Eight local artists hit the
road for art experiences
By Jodi Schneider McNamee
Correspondent
The
Roundhouse
Foundation has a strong inter-
est in ensuring that Sisters’
creative community remains
dynamic.
In an effort to further its
support for the visual arts and
artists in Sisters and Central
Oregon, The Roundhouse
Foundation invited a group
of eight artists who responded
from a pool of 30 to experi-
ence workshops, artist in resi-
dency, and shared-space pro-
graming at various schools of
art throughout the country.
Each artist attended a dif-
ferent workshop at either
Anderson Ranch Arts Center,
Archie Bray Foundation
for the Ceramic Arts,
Arrowmount School of Arts,
Penland School of Crafts,
or Sitka Center for Art and
Ecology.
After participating in the
workshops and residencies
the traveling artists returned
to Central Oregon with their
artwork, which is now dis-
played as an exhibit at the
Sisters Art Works Building,

An Oregon Community Foundation Grant will expand the capacity of Circle of Friends.
Grant to boost mentorship program
By Jim Cornelius
News Editor
Nothing is more critical
to the health of a commu-
nity than the well-being of its
youth. For years now, Circle
of Friends has been provid-
ing the community’s most
vulnerable children a nurtur-
ing and sustained relation-
ship with a volunteer mentor.
Those mentors teach positive
values and have attainable
expectations for each child to
become a healthy, productive
member of the community.
That effort just got a
major boost in the form
of an Oregon Community
Foundation Grant for
$20,000. The award was pre-
sented at Circle of Friends’
annual mentor appreciation
event last Friday, which
was attended by 40 people
at the Pine Meadow Village
Clubhouse.
Executive Director
Debbie Newport wrote the
grant. She told The Nugget
that the funds will build
capacity for the organiza-
tion to both serve more chil-
dren and broaden its program
offerings as the children get
older.
Specifically, the $20,000
will assist with program
development for middle
school/high school youth;
provide professional devel-
opment and training for men-
tors; and help implement
a comprehensive program
evaluation.
The program currently
serves 28 children.
“(The grant) is going to
allow us to grow, to reach
more kids based on what the
need is,” Newport said. “We
