The Sisters Outlaws
cheerleading squad put
together a solid show-
ing Saturday, February 11,
at the Veteran’s Memorial
Coliseum in Portland, site
of the OSAA Cheerleading
Championships.
Vying with 13 other
schools from the 4A classifi-
cation, the Outlaws finished
the competition in sixth place
with 143.30 points.
“Placing sixth as a team
is incredible considering
that Sisters High has only
been involved in competitive
cheerleading since last year,”
said assistant Coach Kayla
Jeffrey.
The teams represented at
state qualified by placement
in competitions earlier this
season. All classifications
from 6A to 1A congregated at
the Coliseum for the OSAA
championships, filling the
day with routines that include
tumbling, pyramid building,
and acrobatic feats.
Gladstone, which finished
second last year to Sweet
Home, turned the tables on
the Huskies, edging them
by the narrowest of margins.
The Gladiators tallied 175.8
points, just .2 points ahead of
Sweet Home with 175.6.
The Henley Hornets
placed third (172.2), North
Marion fourth (166.3) and
Newport (158.1) fifth.
Each team was scored by
a panel of judges in three cat-
egories. Sisters scored 51.40

points in Building Skills,
53.90 points in Tumbling and
Jumps, and 41.0 points for
Overall Routine. The team
was dinged 3.0 points for a
safety penalty to finish with
143.30 total points.
Since the school has not
had a competitive cheer-
leading squad for very long,
much of the student body is
largely unaware of what hap-
pens at competition, accord-
ing to Jeffrey.
“We hope that as the
Sisters school community
sees us perform more and
more, they will understand
more fully the athletic nature
of competitive cheerleading,”
she said. “Competitive cheer-
leading shares some of the
same elements as gymnastics
and dance teams.”
Jeffrey added, “I thought
that our team, among all
the challenges, really per-
severed and did a remark-
able job. So many practices
were canceled and resched-
uled due to snow and other
interruptions.”
Team members include
Emma Boyer, Abi Busick,
Roy Gannon, AriAnne Griffy,
Amy Hills, Errin Hongel,
Lexi Jeffrey, Cylie Lagao,
Cassidy Ling-Scott, Grace
Maiden, Victoria Maiden,
and Beth Ann Yount.
