We’ve all been going
through so much with this
historic winter. We are being
pulled in directions we don’t
want to be pulled in: time,
money, safety, strength.
We are dealing with some
unknowns, and unknowns
usually scare us.
And we are in this
together. We are communi-
cating with each other in our
time of need and distress. We
are either giving or receiving
as community, a bunch of
neighbors we might know or
might not know.
Yet, in all this, there has
been so much beauty come
out of our community and
most likely more to come:
The many crews who’ve
taken on the task of climb-
ing up on snowy/icy roofs
to clear them. Who wants to
climb around on our steep-
pitched roofs in deep snow
and known ice? There is one
crew I’ve heard of that sings
while doing this daunting
task. These folks have lists
an arm long to get through of
people in need. They work

early till late seven days a
week to help us beat time.
It costs some serious money
to get our roofs cleared of
snow and ice dams, but we
are warm inside our homes
and not in the hospital with
lots of broken parts from
falling off those roofs, and
we rest easier knowing
those guys really took care
of our needs avoiding costly
and inconvenient insurance
claims.
Then there are the snow-
plow crews. We’ve got the
City of Sisters, ODOT, com-
mercial plowers and many
a neighbor with a snow
blower helping others out.
Lots of these crews have
gotten stuck as they whiz
through their tasks to get on
to the next mile of road or
driveway, and there seems
to be someone who comes
by (usually another plower)
to pull them out and off they
go again. While we sleep
scores of these hard-work-
ing souls are out there in the
darkness getting us able to
move again. Being able to
move through this winter
with some normalcy like
getting in our vehicles to go
to work or school or grocery
shopping is a true gift from
them to us.
A shout-out to my dear
neighbor, Sue, who hand-
shovels our driveway and
walkway while I’m laid up
after surgery. It takes her
hours to do this task. When
it’s really coming down

Thank you, Sue!
How about you? What
stories do you have of kind-
nesses being offered to you?
What have you witnessed
out there? An inconvenient
and costly winter for sure,
yet without the warmth of
neighborliness it would be a
bear of colossal proportions
to contend with.

The Nugget. “It’s a time

real learning happen. Where
EMS students can demon-

of hard work, like success-
fully taking vital signs while
teaching their ‘patients’ how

“When the high school
students tear down their
