8 Wednesday, February 1, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Sisterspshelterpispchangingplocation ‘Spay-ghetti’pdinnerpp willpbenefitpBrightSide By Sue Stafford Correspondent February 1 is moving day for the Sisters Cold Weather Shelter. After being housed at Westside Church of Sisters for the month of January, the shelter will be hosted by Sisters Community Church for the month of February, in their annex hangar. An enclosed trailer has been given to the shelter by an anonymous donor, enabling the monthly moves in the winter, as well as providing storage for shelter materials during the rest of the year. Donations continue to fill needs of the shelter and its guests. The hangar at Sisters Community Church has con- crete floors and no carpet, so I&J Carpets of Bend is donat- ing carpet mats that will be put down on the floor under the sleeping mats. The women of Westside Church Bend are making 20 handmade twin-size quilts which the shelter guests may keep. The quilts should be available by mid-February. Tate Metcalf of Sisters Athletic Club has made the club showers available for shelter guests who would like to take a hot shower. Passes for certain days and times will be available at the shel- ter. Liam Hughes, executive director of Sisters Park & Recreation District, is work- ing on making their showers available as well. More than $5,000 has come from a variety of sources. One of the men from The Shepherd’s House, James, who often works the over- night shift at the shelter, reported that a large shelter, where he used to work in New York, was amazed at how quickly the Sisters shel- ter has been able to be fully operational and offering all that it does to the guests. Lois Kaping, shelter co- chair, reported the four main requirements that needed to be met in order to oper- ate the shelter have all been met: location, volunteers, money, and momentum in the community. One need that seems to be a constant is for good qual- ity wool socks, which can be dropped off in the evening between 6 and 10 p.m. at the shelter, or at the Habitat ReStore during the day. Sisters Community Church is located at 1300 W. McKenzie Hwy. The hangar is located back behind the baseball field, accessible from McKinney Butte Road.
